But shouldn't Gotenks be above SSJ3 Goku for any of this to make sense? And we know Gotenks isn't anywhere near Buu, let alone Goku.

He doesn't have to be. After all, there's a 4x difference between SSJ2 and SSJ3 and Gotenks can be in between the two forms. Also, there's that "Boo's ki is like a lie" line.

Vegeta chose to fight Boo to death because he knew he was as good as dead once Boo fought back and Boo would kill everyone if no one stop him.

Goku implies he wanted to give the kids a try. He's got to ballpark that to be close to or higher than his own power. Either that means he and Gotenks could do it or he expected Gotenks to be high in SSJ3 tier.

Now, as far as SSJ3 being worthless. I have a different opinion here, because SSJ3 could keep up with Fat Buu, it just couldn't destroy him in my opinion. He was able to fight off Boo just fine. If Gotenks had the potential to be at a higher level than that, he might stand a better chance at doing more permanent damage. Base Gotenks being SSJ2 level justifies that, which is where I'd place him.

Piccolo's statement is the only one that should matter, imo. He makes it clear that Base Gotenks is nothing to Boo, which means he's nothing to Goku.
