Did Super do anything for battle powers that Z didn't do?

People complain about Super being horrible with inconsistent battle powers and stupid power-ups that come from nowhere only when the plot demands it, but is it worse than anything Z previously did?

I think so. Toriyama said several times on interviews he’d struggle to keep the story going, so it at least seems like he’d bother making the power ups logical. (Even if people fail to understand that sometimes). Super’s problem is not the bloat, it’s the randomness of the power ups: Black had this stupid ability of getting stronger out of nowhere in the anime, for example.

But was that not something that happened in Z as well? The Boo Saga seemed to be rife with constant plot points that allowed the saga to keep dragging on and on.

Random getting stronger in the middle of the fight (under the disguise of "he/she's adapting to battle" line) is something DragonBall never did. Goku Black is an even worse offender.

All in the anime.

I'd say Goku Black is even worse in the manga.

Not really. They did in the anime with Goku magicakly becoming stronger than Gohan to fight Pure Boo, but that’s it. The manga still bothered to explain power ups, even if they were ludicrous.

If Boo Arc were like Super, we’d have SSJ Gotenks Pre going toe to toe with Super Boo in spite of Piccolo’s statements, getting stomped and then unlocking SSJ3 mid fight.

Regarding power?

Regarding his power ups. Zenkai's never should've been brought back.
Zenkais were a better explanation than the anime version. The anime didn't give an explanation at-all and at one point even says they don't even know what's going-on (via Goku Black).

Yeah but Goku Black literally could have powered down and have Zamasu stab him, and heal him. Rince and repeat, him keeping Trunks alive was ridiculous. And even Toyo didn't know what was going on by the finale. :troll

He did, besides Zenkais can't be intentionally self-inflicted IIRC or maybe not by yourself. Did he not?

If we're talking about Super Anime then we have to compare it with Z anime as well. Boo arc anime is similar to Super anime in terms of battle power. You got SSjin/2 Vegeta and Goku holding themselves well against Gohan and Gotenks inside Boo's body and their power were said to be equal to the original ones and yet the fight demonstrated the opposite.

Well Goku managed to power up through intense gravity training.

Not to mention that by what the story presents to us with Goku no longer being able to get Zenkais, the loophole that somehow Black can due to having a different soul in the same body as that version of Goku despite Zenkais being purely a biological factor is a grand canyon-sized plot hole.

He didn't intentionally try to abuse Zenkai though.

To me nope.
DragonBall SUPER removed their limits on power & added an entirely new set of possibilities.

There seems to have more unjustified power ups on Super. Characters gaining a lot of power isn't exclusive to Super, but in Z we had more of a reason to believe why a certain chatacter got stronger.

To me, they seem to abuse Saiyan's DNA especially during ToP arc similarly to what they did from Freeza arc.
