Just the original DB aka the part 1. I'm talking about the most important and focused character of the first series. For me it goes like this

Goku/Roshi/Bulma/Krillin

Goku - Main character. Pretty obvious.
Muten Roshi - Was the main mentor figure of the series and his relationships tied heavily into the focus of the 22nd TB and Piccolo Daimao Arcs.
Kuririn - Was the most well developed of the cast and his friendship with Goku progressed well, being pivotal to Goku's motivations in the Piccolo Daimao Arc.
Piccolo Daimao - Most iconic Part 1 villain who brought the stakes to a new level and allowed the series to progress in a multitude of ways.

Edited the title considering with the recent bump, it's far easier to differentiate the two threads than looking at the date of the OP.

Goku - A staple in the Dragon Ball franchise. The main character ought to belong here by default.
Bulma - Markedly influential through her invention of the Dragon Radar, and her adventures enabled Goku to come out of his comfort zone and experience life through a wider scope.
Roshi - Played a siginificant part in shaping up Goku mentally and physically, and maintained some sort of connection with the plot even after his association with the Tenkaichi Budokai.
King Piccolo - Really pushed the envelope in terms of villainy, and extended his impact in the following arc through his creation of Ma Junior.
