So, Trunks told Goku everything he knew about the Androids. He was utterly powerless against them, and would be monsters even for Yardrat Goku. The Z Fighters can have a shot if they train for 3 years though.

But how strong did the Z Fighters expect the Artificial Humans to be? Did they all had the same plateau in mind? It seems like Vegeta and Piccolo had different PoVs on them, considering Vegeta calls both weaker than expected:
Chapter 343 (DBZ 149), P7.4
Vegeta: “I’ve realized by watching your faint movements up to now…That you guys don’t seem as terrible as the rumors made out.”

But Piccolo is doubtful whether they were too weak or he and Vegeta were too strong:
Chapter: 347 (DBZ 153), P3.2-3
Piccolo: “It seems that in the original history, we were supposed to be wiped out by you two androids…But it looks like the future has changed somehow…Was it that you weren’t as strong as we thought?...Or have we grown too strong?...

So... Thoughts?

Piccolo also said he wasn't lacking confidence, so I'd assume he'd still consider himself capable of taking them on in a 1 V 1 fight. I don't think it'd make much sense for him to underestimate his own strength when he clearly knows how strong Galu is at his peak. My guess is that he didn't expect #19 and #20 to be too much stronger than their post-absorption selves.

What exactly Trunks said was that he could barely fight them one on one. So, what AT, the readers and
Z fighters had in mind was two powers a little greater than Alternate Trunks. Of course, that was
retconned later, but it gives us good evidence about where to place 19/20.

Piccolo asking to fight 20 alone heavily implies he believes himself to be a match for the Androids too.

But anyway, he and Vegeta had different expectatives, right?

Between seeing #20's speed, taking #20's eye lasers (not his full-power, obviously), and judging how #19 was looking against a Super Saiyan Goku that's not as strong as he should be, I think Piccolo had a good enough impression on what to expect from the Androids by that point.

Piccolo himself should be above the Super Saiyans from 3 yrs ago. That's the only way the possibility of them being too strong could make any sense. If Piccolo can't even handle Super Saiyan Trunks back then, we know for a fact he didn't become too strong to deal with the Androids.

Trunks seeing Goku's power only gives him a little hope for the future. Yardrat Goku + 3 Years of Training = A little hope... So the expected Androids are stronger than what Trunks expects Goku's power to be in 3 years.

The Expected Androids can trash Yardrat Goku. If Piccolo can't do the same, he would have zero confidence in himself. Piccolo at least wipes the floor with Goku and with Sick Goku there, he might as well wipe the floor with Yardrat Goku as well.
