For those who hate Goku's characterization in Super, who do you blame? Toei or Toriyama?

Goku these days gets a lot of hate for the way he acts in Super especially in wake of the Universal Survival arc. In the past, people have blamed Toei but between the interview of Toriyama expressing disappointment over the anime "making" him a "righteous" hero and the other pretty much saying Goku doesn't give a shit about his family... people began to look the other way.

I've called out Toei in the past for the way he's characterized in Super and the franchise as a whole for essentially throwing Goku x Chi-Chi under a bus these days but I don't think it's fair to blame them entirely anymore. Toei may play up his stupidity to obnoxious degrees but at least they make an effort to add substance to his character with what little they have to work with.

Toyatoro's Goku, to me, is a total asshole. On top of the "doesn't know what kissing is" gag still being in the manga, he demonstratively doesn't give a shit about his family as he only cared about avenging himself against Goku Black and giving Gohan shit for not being at the Universe 6 tournament.

Toyotaro even shifted the emotion of a reuniting moment between Goku and his family all to Vegeta in the manga version of the Future Trunks arc.

This is important as the manga is supposedly closure to Toriyama's vision for the series.

Hmmmmm? I would say that the Anime supports Goku X ChiChi considering they both are repeatedly shown to care for one and the other. And Toriyama never one stated that Goku gives a shit about his family, he stated that he views them more as friends than loved ones.

As fantards we think Goku's sociopathic tendencies have run its course.

From what started as a sporting gesture, giving a cell a senzu bean that way Gohan's honor is enhanced by beating cell, has morphed Goku into Homer Simpson by Dragonball Super.

However in GT, Goku was like movie Goku, crack a joke and kill with no fucks given.

DBS super is pretty much the Goku the internet invented over the last 20 years versus the one that truly existed in 1996 - 1997.

In short, I blame the fans. Dbs super is about giving the masses what they want and it's not pretty.

In the end, everything falls on Akira Toriyama. The buck stops with him. He's the one that opened the door for all of this nonsense. Even if you want to say that Toei played a huge role, it was Akira Toriyama that allowed Toei to have so much involvement in his story by basically giving away everything to them. He has made it so that he has zero say. They made an entire series without even really consulting him. That's when you know that the artist has completely signed away the rights to his series. Or they had him contracted to produce the series for them, which would make it their work to begin with. That's what Super is -- it's Toei's work. Akira Toriyama's involvement is inconsequential. If they wanted to can him, they could and just continue with someone else. That's what happens when the creator doesn't care about his property. Sailor Moon's creator, on the other hand, has a dog in the race. She holds a firm grip over her property and makes sure that nothing half-assed ever happens. With Kai, we got a lazy "refreshing" that uses like 99% of the old footage; with Sailor Moon's "refreshing," it was reanimated. That's the difference in how the creator treats his or her property.

Not gonna blame the GOATs but appreciate them. :troll :toei

Anyway, I could care less how the Japanese Goku acts since I'm a biggest fan of FuniDub Goku so I'm cool.

Toriyama: Right. There’s how, basically, Son Goku from Dragon Ball doesn’t fight for the sake of others, but because he wants to fight against strong guys. So once Dragon Ball got animated, at any rate, I’ve always been dissatisfied with the “righteous hero”-type portrayal they gave him. I guess I couldn’t quite get them to grasp the elements of “poison” that slip in and out of sight among the shadows.

I guess it's Toriyama's wish? :troll

Funidub Goku is a little better. Real Goku is close to the tfs version.

Goku always gets a mouth present which I doubt if the real Goku gets it too. :troll
