I'm not sure if this point has been brought up before, but:

Goku wasn't able to transform into a Super Saiyan at will at first, and said that he needed a lot of practice. I don't think any reasonable person would try to argue that Gohan practiced transforming into a Super Saiyan 2 a lot during the seven year gap given that it's stated he didn't train at all, so why would Gohan be able to transform into a SS2 at will?

It's possible he gradually stopped training, since he seemed rather Goku-like (wrong term, but you get it) at the end of the Cell Saga as opposed to his Boo Saga self but I don't go with Super-Saiyan 2 either. Just a thought.

Good point. My main issue is...wouldn't transforming into the form to show off imply that you could do it at will? Super Saiyan was still new back when Goku said that, so reaching that state alone seemed like a big deal.

Changing into a Super Saiyan 3 was something Goku wasn't used to, then he does it in a single panel next time we see the form. I don't know.

Anyway, there is something that bothers me in all of this. If Gohan was only a SSjin when he fought Dabura, why does Dabura look so calm when he finds out SSjin Goku has a kiri of 3,000? Gohan was seemingly overpowering Dabura, and as we all know, SSjin Goku>>SSjin Teen Gohan. So either Gohan was a SSjin2 or Toriyama lost his mind.

I usually try to explain that one away by saying Goku was suppressed for whatever reason against Yakon, which also goes well with SSJ Majin Vegeta being treated as a tremendous deal. But there's also Goku being unable to overload Yakon until he briefly uses SSJ2, so yeah...

3000 was just the highest possible reading at the meter.

There are at least 10 points for Gohan being either SS or SS2. It is very, very difficult to choose a side unfortunately.

Perhaps we can get every single point for either side and sticky it? Anyone interested in that?
