I just watched the fight and I agree. First SSJ2 Goku was fighting Black and was roughly even, and Trunks asked why Goku wasn't using the same power he used before, while the camera showed SSJ3 in a flashback. Black then powered up several times, and at the end of the fight, SSJ2 Goku was still stronger than him, enough so that Black was badly wounded when he returned to the future. SSJ2 Goku must have held back significantly against Trunks and Black initially.

SSJ2 Goku was fighting at the same level he used against Trunks initially. Black then made a large power up and overpowered Goku. Goku then started to get the best of Black again by a fairly significant amount. Black finally made his largest power up and seemingly became stronger than Goku, only for Goku to be equal to him at the end of the fight - though Black was the only one wounded by the end of it. I think your gaps are far too close to describe all of this.

Future Trunks commented that Goku Black is much stronger than Goku SSJ3 (Suppressed against Future Trunks). Then Goku Black had 4 power increases while fighting Goku SSJ2 and Future Trunks commented that Goku Black is a little stronger.

That means that after the fight between Goku SSJ2 vs Goku Black, Future Trunks deduced that Goku SSJ3 (FP) should be much more powerful even than Goku Black.

Simply put, surely Future Trunks SSJ2 wasn't much superior to Piccolo at the time.
