I thought the opening scene in the village portrayed First Order troopers in a much deadlier light. Also better tech, as SS2 said.
Do keep in mind that Imperial Troopers still used a healthy mix of clones, who weren't as accurate a regular human.

Stormtroopers are so inconsistent. So deadly, so precise until they go up against a main character. Then they can't hit shit.
I'd go with the first order just because there seems to be a lot more variance in the individual proficiency of the stormtroopers. Where as the OT troopers seem to universally incompetent.

The Imperial Stormtroopers couldn't find their way out of a cardboard box if the directions were written in plain sight on the inside. I got the impression the First Order Stormtroopers were some legitimate killers from the first scene of TFA, and when they crashed the party on that other planet where the one guy whipped out something to combat a fucking lightsaber. That one guy alone could probably do away with all of the Imperial Stormtroopers.

Being able to take on someone wielding a Lightsaber, even if for the first time, gives First Order troopers a lot more credit than the OT Stormtroopers, especially with their performance in Rebels alongside that.
