This may be a crazy conclusion but consider this... Mario is often dismissed as kiddie stuff while there's adults who are openly fans of Dragon Ball (especially those who grew up on it) and the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise is struggling.
Mario video games may have made more than Dragon Ball in terms of merchandise and Dragon Ball merch is equal to Sonic video games but bare in mind, Dragon Ball didn't become mainstream in the west till the late 90's plus it was recovering from the anime industry collapse during the mid 90's. This also probably doesn't count how much Dragon Ball also made on video games, the manga, and video releases.
Akira Toriyama is also worth more than Shigeru Miyamoto.
