Vegeta says he doesn't want to be second place, but couldn't Gohan be excluded since he had retired from martial arts? Piccolo seemed to put more stock in Gohan being defeated by Beerus than Vegeta choosing not to fight him.

I think that after splitting from Vegetto, Goku and Vegeta retained Vegetto's power. I can't remember the evidence for this, if there even is any, but it makes the most sense out of any other theories out there.

Perhaps since he saw that Beerus was astronomically more powerful than Gohan, it wouldn't make sense for SSJ2 Vegeta, someone only slightly stronger, to fight Beerus.

Yeah it's tough. But Gohan is a Saiyan and Goku is the strongest Saiyan. Not too sure how to handle that quote.

Maybe in DBZ's continuity the bad air inside Boo weakens everyone in addition to dissolving Potara Fusions, unless they are connected to Boo themselves? That makes Vegeta and Goku being scared to fight Super Boo make sense while also explaining how they can simultaneously hold their own against Ultimate Gohan and SSJ3 Gotenks in regular SSJ from retaining half of Vegetto's power.

You can make up some sort of nonsense for why they don't realize their own strength, but it's never really going to make all that much sense, although, whatever we come up with is probably much better than the reason 17 got to be Blue level training on an island by himself.

Kai still had SSJ Goku and Vegeta getting stomped by Super Boo after they split from being Vegetto though
