SSj Grade 3 Goku

During one scene in the RoSaT, Goku transform into a SSj Grade 3. When Gohan senses Goku's ki, he exclaims that Goku will definitely be able to beat Cell. Goku is at least > Initial 2nd Form Cell. The question is, did Goku improve his strength at all before becoming a Grade 3? Otherwise, if not, then either the gaps between Piccolo & Imperfect Cell, and 16 & 2nd Form Cell are not nearly as big as what is shown, or SSj G3 is an absolutely massive power boost. What do you guys think?

Vegeta had to train for 2 months to access G2, so I assume Goku improved to some degree when he attained the grade forms.

I'm assuming goku didn't just sit there thinking about surpassing SSJ the whole time.

It's had to have been at least an hour since goku and gohan went in the chamber.

Pretty good observation, ryan. I think he did improve, but not so much compared to his whole improvement. I already saw people arguing Goku didn't improve at all and for this reason the SSJG3 multiplier should be pretty big. Papasmurf's reason is a good one. I have something like this:
