Was Gohan enraged vs 3rd form Freeza?

The artwork and context does imply Gohan was enraged. However:

Chapter: 303 (DBZ 109), P10.2-3
Context: after Freeza repels Gohan’s attack
Piccolo: “He bounced that back, but…You’ve become strong, Gohan…I’m happy…”
Gohan: “B-but it wasn’t any use…I put all my force into that, but…It didn’t affect Freeza…”

Piccolo praises Gohan's power like it's his base power, not another force driving Gohan, when every other situation Gohan was enraged his potential was praised, not himself:

Chapter: 297 (DBZ 103), P11.2
Context: after Gohan snaps and beats up second form Freeza
Vegeta: “Un…unbelievable…That brat…So he can draw out this much power when he goes into a frenzy and loses his reason…?! Don’t tell me that he’s the one closest to Super Saiyan…”

Thoughts?

I think he was not, but it's debatable. It's like a pseudo controlled rage boost.

It really sounds like it to me. Gohan has never acted like this about his enraged power after using it.

The part that gets me is the way he attacks Freeza. He has his typical enraged look.

"Why don't you just die?!!!" totally sounds like something an enraged Gohan would say.

His eyes are also whitened which they usually do when he loses his shit.

Perhaps they turn white when he's angry in general? Maybe it doesn't signify a rage boost necessarily.

I'm really not sure now.

Let's look at this:

Also this:

Gohan's attack ended up being useless in the Nappa instance as well, which Gohan was able to recognize despite being enraged while doing it.

Against Freeza, Gohan was pretty surprised that his attack wasn't enough to stop Freeza. His reaction says it all.

So I suppose it's possible for him to be enraged and still be aware of the power he's using at times. This goes against the idea of him being berserk, but we know he didn't go crazy to the point where he was unaware of attacking. The only instance of this being a thing is when Gohan headbutted Raditz and when Piccolo tossed him into the mountain.

There's a difference between being mad and getting a rage boost though. He was obviously pissed out of his mind about Piccolo being tooled, but he's not boosted by the rage imo.

The distinction between anger and rage boost is mentioned here:

So imho, rage/anger =\= boost in power necessarily.

That's an excellent point EV. Now I'm not sure what to think.

Aside from the visual look, I'm starting to believe a sign of him being enraged is his lack of hesitation to attack.

Against Nappa:

Against Vegeta:

Dodoria:

4th form Freeza without a second thought:

He definitely retained the enraged eyes:

In every single instance above, Gohan just attacked without a second thought.

Now I think he was definitely rage boosted when he attacked Nappa, Vegeta, and Dodoria. Against Freeza, whatever power he might've generated would've probably been too irrelevant to note now that Freeza was in his most powerful form. A lot of this stuff can go either way, but I believe the idea of him being rage boosted in most of these instances make sense.

That's a great compilation of information there EV. Going by your analysis, Gohan would certainly be boosted against 3rd form Freeza then. Honestly I suppose it makes sense, as Gohan was clearly below Piccolo before and showed no sign that he could out-do Piccolo against Freeza's second form.

Admittedly, I'd prefer Gohan's natural full-power being above Piccolo's there. Freeza's statement on his zenkai makes it more sensible for this to be all of Gohan's power and not some rage boost. But like you said, Piccolo was considered the strongest one there prior to Gohan's outburst, so.

Damn, this thread has shattered a belief I've held onto for a good 4 years lol. I'm in physical pain right now.

Gohan's power was constantly growing due to the potential. It's not much of an assumption to say his power skyrocketed while Piccolo was fighting.

Btw, i did this post based on your post on F, SSJ2.

He'd notice it if he was still increasing. I think his natural increase ended after his Zenkai from 2nd form Freeza.

I don't think so. Vegeta noting his power was groing throhought the battle is enough IMO. I think his and Kuririn's power kept increasing even after they went home.

What reason do we have to believe that? Vegeta only mentioned Gohan's power further rising after he had the Zenkai from second form Freeza. Wouldn't it be noted if it was still rising at an astronomical rate?
