Since Dragonball Z first aired, with which character did you initially resonate with from the first few episodes?

I came to the states in September of 1998, and in that month, is when Dragonball Z was introduced in my life. I was six years old. It's a bit difficult to recall exactly, but my gut feeling says it was Piccolo. Piccolo was the first character that I resonated with initially. Either way, the moment Vegeta was introduced, it was over. I instantly fell in love with the character, and he was my favorite for an extremely long time. I don't remember exactly when I found about Broly, but at that time it was a very close tie. I do believe I still held onto Vegeta over Broly, though. Even though my avatar is Broly, I do believe Vegeta was more impactful.

It remained this way until Dragonball Super was released, and Goku Black was unveiled.

I genuinely can’t remember. I can tell for sure it wasn’t Gohan even though I was a kid like him.

Probably was one of the humans since they’re all “normal” guys.

I resonated with Piccolo the most, I believe. Gohan came up next after that. Too bad the Boo Saga treated these characters so poorly.

Definitely Goku. In the very early 2000s the Boo arc was the only thing playing in Canada. It continually repeated for several years. One of the first episodes I ever saw was Goku turning SSJ3, and I was hooked immediately.

I'd say Goku in regard to his dynamic with Raditz.

Having a blood relation to someone doesn't mean you have to side with them, especially if it goes against your character.

Addendum: I want to say I first started watching DBZ in 1999, long before it even came on Toonami, it aired at 6:30 am on some local channel, right after Sailor Moon and the 700 Club lol. Depending on what was going on, I had to leave to catch the bus while DBZ was still airing, so for the first couple weeks I'd only see parts of an episode here and there. Due to this, there were a few characters that blended together. Specifically, I thought Raditz and Vegeta were the same, as with Goku and Yamucha.

The thing with Yamucha was that while he wore the same Dogi as Goku, he played baseball, chased girls and with the way he was voice acted, he seemed the most American character and I initially gravitated towards him the most early on. I think that changed because once they went to Namek, Yamucha just kind of disappeared from the show and it was hard to stay connected to him. As well, the facial scar helped add an element of coolness and made him stand out a bit among the others.
