When does Movie 6 take place?

I used to think it took place during the 3 years, but Dende is Earth's guardian, so it can't be right.
Also thought it took place during the 10 day wait for the Cell Games, but Gohan can't go Super Saiyan.
When does this movie take place?

Definitely after the 3 year gap, with Piccolo being Kamiccolo. Perhaps it's an alternate universe where Piccolo defeated the Androids and Dende came to earth to become guardian.

In the timeline where Trunks (the one whose time machine Cell stole) came from the future and the Z Fighters defeated the Androids without Cell appearing.

Official sources are mixed, to say the least. Daizenshuu 6 speculates it taking place during the 10 days' wait for the Cell Games (which has so many problems if trying to fit it into the main timeline), whereas most video games opt to it being before the battle with #19 and #20. It's definitely some alternate timeline, being one where Piccolo either fused with Kami during the 3 year training or at some point after it with either #19 and #20 being the only Artificial Humans or there being some way the group disposed of the others without the Rosat.

Somewhere between Freeza’s death and the arrival of the OG Androids, given Trunks’ absence, everyone’s appearences (Specially Gohan) and the production and release dates of the movie itself. Dende being god is probably just an odd behind the scenes decision since the movie’s production far predates Piccolo and Kami’s fusion, let alone Dende becoming Kami.

Toriyama either gave Toei info from months ahead or Toei coincidentally got lucky on something and Toriyama liked it so he used it in the manga. Either way, Piccolo's fused with Kami in Movie 6, the Super Saiyans and Gohan are their Android Saga selves, and Trunks is absent. That pretty much just leaves the 3 year gap, but that means an explanation has to be made for Piccolo seemingly randomly fusing with Kami. Maybe Piccolo figured he should do it to make sure he could defend himself and the others.

The movie came while the Z senshi chased after Doctor Gero just before Piccolo was kicking 20's ass so there are not other androids. You can say it's an alternative universe where SSjin Vegeta killed Android 20.
