Are we sure Goku wasn't using his match level on Gohan?

Tao Pai Pai is glazed as an absolute beast during the 22nd budokai. Roshi and the others saw Goku against Gohan and still were in shock when he said he defeated Tao.

Korin said Goku got many times stronger after his training so that leaves alot of room to fit the implied gaps.

Goku also said during the 22nd that he only uses his true battle level in death matches and while he needed the dragonballs he obviously didn't want to kill Gohan. He hadn't nothing against Baba's fighters even before he found out his grandfather was behind the mask.

He seemed to go all out against Akkuman. Nobody made note of him trying less hard against Gohan.

Yeah this is pretty hard to refute. Goku even said he wouldn't hold back anymore, although you could still make a case that Kuririn told him not to hold back against him and he still held back his battle level.

Roshi and the others never saw Goku fight Tao so they wouldn't know he wasn't trying as hard.
When Akkuman whipped out the pitchfork Goku said he was going serious ("honki", the same term he used to describe his theoretical SSJG FP in the BoG movie).

Why is Tao so glazed at the 22nd then if everybody and their mama is stronger than him then?

We have no idea. His legend is strong, but he himself doesn't appear as strong as his legend suggests. But the facts remain, Goku trashed this bum and made light work of him.

You don't think the Crane Hermit, Tao's own brother wouldn't know his power? Tenshinhan claps Yamcha and then is like "wtf?" after Goku says he killed Tao.

I also wouldn't say Goku really "trashed" or made light work of Tao. He struggled alot even in the rematch. Tao damaged Goku more than Gohan ever did, especially in the anime after Tao climbed Korin's tower, Goku even said in the anime that Tao was almost as strong as him after Korin.

He definitely should. I don't know, it's a wonky segment. Maybe a little buyer's remorse on AT's part or something.

It could just be shock. But yeah King Chappa slaps.

Yeah I can buy buyer's remorse on AT's part. A similar and much more extreme example is Crocodile doing way better in Marineford than his lackluster Alabasta feats showed in One Piece. And there wasn't even any mention of him training during the interim.

Goku tells Tien he’s going to go all out him because of two reasons: 1) Because Tien is trying to kill him, which also applies to Devilman, and 2) Because Tien is strong enough to die from it (Which does not apply to Devilman). So it’s still possible Goku didn’t go all out.

Does he tell Kuririn something else?

"Not dying" feats are plot.

50% Freeza couldn't kill Base Goku despite being pissed and wanting to kill him.

Vegeta kills Cui with a punch and a flick of his finger at 1.33x yet Kaioken x3 Goku didn't even knock Vegets out after hitting him multiple times and blasting him into the sky with a KHH.
