There's no doubt that Goku is the main lead of Z but who is the second lead after him? Only two characters that were focused throughout the series and that's Gohan and Vegeta.
When Gohan was first introduced, he was completely opposite of kid Goku and doesn't like fighting at all and it took Piccolo's death that made him determined to be a warrior and he finally reach his peaked when he defeated Cell. While he left fighting and focused on studying after Cell's defeat and it took Boo's revival to regain his fighting instinct back but still failed to defeat Boo.
As for Vegeta, he was introduced as antagonist for Goku a complete opposite of Goku and a Saiyan just like Goku. But he fought for a selfish reason and will kill his Saiyan fellow if they got in his way (Nappa
). He was forced to team up with Goku and his friends to fight Freeza who destroyed their race and planet. After Goku defeated Freeza, Vegeta's new goal was to surpass Goku and so he did for a short while but still failed though 
. He finally learned why Goku surpassed him easily and redeemed himself while they were figting against Boo and it was his plan that lead Boo's defeat.
