Why do some fans have such a hard time accepting certain characters' strength?

One example is Chi-Chi. Even if you take into consideration Goku's confusion he was still holding his ground fairly well and she still pushed him back to the point of him taking into the air of which she still easily caught up with him and fought in mid-air which Nam struggled to do with Goku during the 21st Budokai.. and with intense speed (she even had a stance)... Muten Roshi even outright praised her level of skill... you can just see the shock/disbelief on his face he clearly feels. The fact she breezed through the preliminary rounds of the hardest year for the Tenkaichi Budokai like the other finalists have and spared with Goten on a regular basis even after ten years of retirement (not claiming she's anywhere near his power just a point on her level of skill) should be proof enough she's no joke yet some people write off her solo fight as a joke (despite that even Goku vs. Jackie Chun was may more gag-like).

The kids (Goten and Trunks) are similar case but only their strength is even more objective thus making the downplaying more laughable and any reasoning for when people have them at a low-level basically boils down to "They're kids". Goten pushed Gohan back during their sparring match, Trunks gave Vegeta a bit of trouble avoiding his flurry of punches (even forcing to hit Trunks out of reflex when he grazed his cheek) even though he was caught off-guard, and SSJ Trunks scared #18 shitless from a casual ki blast.

Compare to characters like Kaioshin who is seen as really strong from ONE out-of-context statement or Videl who has the tiniest of "feats" blown out of proportion despite did doing literally nothing to be held at a high regard.

I would mention Krillin but he's mostly downplayed in comparison to Tenshinhan.

Is it bias that motives them, indifference... or are am I (and others) an idiot for taking what in regards to their strength literally?

Because they are just silly immature kids. They can't match their brother who's been on it since the age of 4 :troll2

Probably because there is evidence for both sides of the table. Or the author comes back after 20 years with new material that rehashes his original train of thought, which contradicts the accepted norm from fans across the globe; a norm doesn't make the interpretation the correct one. Just because it is a norm doesn't mean we have to accept it.
