I was recommended the manga, but I honestly am more in the mood to watch things right now. The soundtrack of the old anime is also great, although the animation is somewhat strange due to being producced in the 80s. Still, I don't care that much. So long as the story is good, I'll go through it even if takes a while.

So, I'm up to episode 17. I like how the character of Joe Yabuki (sorry if the name is spelled wrongly) is presented so far, which seems an accurate characterisation when taking into account the life he has faced. Old man Dampei is also a good character and it's cool seeing him being so thrilled at the prospect of training a boxer, as he hasn't a way to compete anymore. Rikiishi is, thus far, my favorite character. Besides having a good overall design followed by a good soundtrack, I like his overall "cool" personality.

Dampei is ignoring Joe right now, but I'm completely sure such is apart of a lesson. He wouldn't, out of nothing, just lose interest in Joe.

70s. Ashita no Joe 2 is the one from the 80s.

Also, in case you forgot from it probably being buried in the Discord, you should switch to AnJ2 once you finish episode 55 of the original and start from episode 2.

Just wait until he goes through one of, if not the, most intense and inspirational training regimes in anime in the episodes around the 40s range. :panties

Thanks for the heads up, CC. Will switch to it when I'm there.

Oh, willing to see that. Will watch some episodes tonight.

Also worth noting that around that time (episodes 42 and onwards) Rikiishi's badass theme song is made even more badass by a vocal version being used as the second ending theme. :pyro

Cool! His theme is thus far my favorite one, although the opening and the soundtrack that Joe whistles are pretty cool as well. There's a different feeling to those themes. They give the anime a rather nice touch.

Yeah, those two tracks are true classics. Shame that the first series of the anime is pretty limited in terms of tracks and other than the renditions of Joe's Lullaby (the first ending) and the lighthearted theme that plays during most of the comic relief scenes with the kids, the renditions of the opening and Rikiishi's theme are the only ones that really stand out. Thankfully, the second series has a lot more variety and whilst none quite measure up to the quality of Rikiishi's theme, the first opening of AnJ2 is arguably better than the first series' opening and the ending theme is great too.

True, the one played in the comic relief moments with the kids is also great. Iirc it's the same one they have Joe whistling, is it not?

I was even whistling in the streets the one Joe did haha. It felt cool.

I think Joe whistles it on occasion, though nowhere near as much as the track "Joe's Whistle".

Jojo is overusing his cross-counter. It's getting kinda dull. The fights are following the same pattern -- Jojo gets beaten up and then uses the crosscounter.

It's Joe, not Jojo. Whereabouts even are you?

That's actually a major part of his character arc and progression as a boxer. He relies too heavily on certain strategies if they work and later on has to learn doing so isn't going to work.

By the time of AnJ2, he only uses the cross-counter about once or twice.
