We've all been down this road before. Most either think Piccolo is ahead of the early Super Saiyans, in their range of power, or weaker than Freeza. I think he's ahead of Super Saiyan Trunks at the very least.

Anyway, I had a little debate with Voice of Reason that ultimately went nowhere. It basically came down to this quote from Trunks:

Viz has Trunks saying: "Chi. I feel Battle Chi!"

Now VoR took this to mean Piccolo wasn't that strong because Trunks didn't regard it as a "Powerful Chi" like he did when he sensed Merged Piccolo a bit later. I said Super Saiyan Vegeta was in the same vicinity with his aura up to no avail.

Does the original have the same translation? Should this mean anything in regards to Piccolo's power?

I don't see why you should give that scene that much thought. It's pretty much the same scene as some of the Z fighters catching hold of Goku's ki only after he turns SSJ, or :Krillin attracting attention by powering up once he found Gero's lab.

Yeah, that's what I thought. I basically cited Krillin and Tien's quotes, but VoR doesn't think they were sensing Piccolo there

Krillin later said Piccolo was "incredibly powerful" before merging with Kami, but no mention of a strong Chi means there's no way for Piccolo to be Super Saiyan tier

Does Trunks use the words "Battle Chi" in the original?

Yeah he says he senses battling ki, which could only refer to Piccolo since #20 is unsensible. But then Piccolo said he felt confident against threats Trunks described, and also was sure #20 was still shit to him after sucking up his ki and Vegeta's blast so...

I guess it just comes to having a vastly different point of view of things. I personally think VoR is a great debater, but certain things like a guy saying something on the Namek saga being the equivalent of what a different guy said in the Boo saga, Nail only telling Piccolo he was strong in order to not piss him off, and Krillin turning off his sensing while commenting on Piccolo's power just doesn't sit well with me. I feel like that's making the story complicated for nothing.

Kuririn said Tenshinhan and Yamcha were huge kis, so I guess by that logic Yamcha & Tenshinhan are > Piccolo.

If we go down that route Videl could be > Super Boo since her fighting ki attracted attention from Gohan and :Krillin couldn't sense Super Boo's ki

Maybe Kuririn just didn't bother sensing, or just an inconsistency.

But if Piccolo's power shot-up that high wouldn't Trunks be surprised someone that strong was fighting? I mean I know he left and they trained, but if Piccolo was >>> every power from before he left, then...

The problem is Super Saiyan Vegeta is floating right there with his aura out. If Piccolo's power stood out with Vegeta right there, it's hard to imagine him being weaker than Suppressed Mecha Freeza. That's how weak he thinks Piccolo is. Trunks also never said anything about Super Saiyan Vegeta being strong until he fought #18 at full-power. He didn't think he was anything special beforehand.

I know it sounds like excuses, but I also think Piccolo is high, but I see why they might think that he isn't.

I don't really think fighting ki stands out that much more. Of course it's going to be different from standing ki, but if I recall correctly Majin Vegeta and Goku's fighting ki didn't really strike Goten and Trunks as more remarkable than Fat Boo's standing ki in the same scene.

When Goku turned Super Saiyan for Trunks, wasn't it said that Goku's Chi was really powerful despite not fighting?

Krillin is the most powerful Z fighter at Android Saga, because, at History Of Trunks movie, the narrator said ''even Krillin was destroyed''.

Yeah, and Videl's ki was only captured by Gohan when she actually started fighting those burglars or whatever. There's no question that fighting ki is higher, but if Piccolo were that much lower, I'd think it'd be like saying Reacoom's fighting ki attracts more attention than Freeza's standing ki, which doesn't really seem to be the case.
