Are Goku or Chi-Chi bad parents?

After yet again another debate on Goku's parenting skills, I felt like making this thread.

Chi-Chi is commonly to task for bad parenting, usually by young boys who don't even grasp the hardships of parenting and see her as nothing more than a reactionary b**** who won't let the heroes have fun or do as they need to. Some even going as far as to make her out to be someone who cares only are her selfish desires. It also doesn't help with TOEI's lust for amping up these seemingly negative qualities (which seems to have become full-force with Super).

The people do react to the overreaction of Chi-Chi's bad parenting/dirty soul/whatever, by throwing Goku under a bus. As for Goku... we'be already discussed his flaws as a parent in great length repeatedly.

Is it true? Are they really the bad parents fans claim they are.. or do they just project too much of their own feelings onto Goham and Goten?

Depends whats your idea of a good parent is.
Is a good parent someone who would always take a jump for their kids?
Someone who wants their kids to be rich and successful?
Someone who generally cares and loves their kids?
Someone who understands their kids?
Etc.
(There are also combinations of these)
Chichi seems like the type of parent that really cares for the better of Gohan and wants him to be succesful, to me Goku is the type that wants him to meet his true potential and see what he is really made out of.(this is in Goku's personal fields) and at the same time he is fine with letting Gohan do what he truly wants (telling him he may become a scholar after cell games)
In ones POV they might be great. Others might go. Goku almost killed Gohan and chichi was always mean to him and call them off as bad. I personally dont.

Personal preference.
I'm sure Gohan or Goten would've said something by now... :/

I don't think they're bad parents. Sure they might have done unfavorable things but then again what parent hasn't? Both of them to me have done the most important thing a parent would and should do for their children.

Chi-Chi

She may nag but she only wanted the best for her boys. She doesn't Gohan to fight because she doesn't want to see him get hurt (like any mother would). When she hears he's "dead" she immediately passes out from the shock. She wants Gohan and later Goten to get an education so they'll be well off in life, she doesn't want them to fight seeing Goku almost die while fighting Piccolo.

Goku

Doesn't show his love like Chi-Chi but then again a mother's love is almost unmatched. He places his utmost confidence in Gohan beating Cell and taking his mantle as protector of the Earth. He wasn't happy to break the news of his son's "Death" and was visibly overjoyed to hear he was still alive and went straight to him. He's happy to meet Goten. He DIED for Gohan twice (I'm sure a parent wouldn't think twice to die saving their kids).

Gohan and Goten don't complain so I think it's clear that they love their parents and don't have a problem with the way they were raised and I'm sure Goku and Chi-Chi love their kids. They may not be the worlds greatest parents but loving your kids and wanting the best for them aren't those 2 of the best things you can do for them?

No, Goku is an aloof parent while Chi-Chi is just a nagging one in the anime. In the manga, she's more of a "normal" parent.
