The series had a decent premise, but poor execution. Despite portraying itself as a series where anyone could die and how humanity had to strategise well just to survive, plot armour and power creep quickly start running amok for the main cast, and that's only for the first season. From what I've heard, the political focus it later gains is a mixed bag as whilst giving the setting more depth than steampunk Spidermen and what's essentially kaiju battles, it's also a major shift in tone from what the fanbase wanted.
It doesn't help that one of the major mysteries of the series was revealed to be the same dumb twist as in Shyamalan's The Village and the different direction the anime went made things worse by bringing time travel into it.
Tl;dr, just watch Blue Gender if looking for an anime about humans trying to survive against a horde of monsters. It may have a major drop in quality in its later episodes, but at least the first half was good.
