Think you mean better. Even without Hirasawa, the 1997 anime still stands on it's own, despite cutting a lot from the manga. Still the best dark fantasy anime of all time by far (though it's not as if it has much competition).

It still has it's flaws. Omitting content, adding Adon filler. I still like it, though. The movies and 2016 pale in comparison.

Well yeah, it did take out a lot of details that helped make Guts' characterization top tier in the manga, as well as ended on that dumb filler ending. Despite that, it still stands on it's own when not compared to the manga, since the strength of the character writing and direction.
