They're both series that had great early arcs and then completely lost my interest and I dropped them.

Berserk at it's best was better.

Detergent (Bleach) is longer, bigger and uncut. :troll :troll :troll :troll

.......

In all seriousness, anything is better than Bleach. Even Fantasia.

Berserk.

I would rather eat out some girl after she hadn't showered for a month than watch Bleach.

Real talk, Berserk following the Tower of Rebirth arc is complete shite. Not as shit as Bleach maybe, but still makes it a pretty overrated manga. I'm still eagerly awaiting the Loli Witch and Guts' other groupies' horrible, long overdue deaths.

Obviously, Bleach is better since its creator bothered to finish it and not go into hiatus :troll

In all seriousness, even the Fantasia Arc has far more going for it than anything in Bleach past the first two arcs, and even those are sub-par at best.

Is Bleach really that bad?

It really is. The first arc is somewhat tolerable as an action series with some slightly psychological action series, though the heavy Yu Yu Hakusho plagiarism for its premise can't be ignored and the heavy power escalation of its finale was rushed. The second arc is the most popular, but completely overrated due to being a cookie-cutter rescue arc that plays out as the poor man's version of Saint Seiya's Sanctuary Arc due to its far less interesting characters and absolutely asinine world building with how Soul Society as a whole ends up being a whole lot of ideas that don't mesh well with each other.

Everything after that is absolutely worthless that does nothing different from any other Shonen, repeating the same plot structure as the Soul Society Arc for over a decade with a mountain of contrivances and plot holes with completely bland characters and no sense of progression to the world as a whole. Even something as poorly written as Part 2 Naruto at least made it feel as though the world was constantly changing with each major event, whereas Bleach always goes back to the status-quo after each major event beyond the deaths of characters with little to offer in investment.

The best compliment I can give it is at least it's still a marginally better Shonen than My Hero Academia, Black Clover or Fairy Tail.

Just a question is there any popular series from the last 20 years that you don't shit on?

Fullmetal Alchemist (Manga/Brotherhood Anime), Vinland Saga, Death Note (pre-timeskip), Planetes and Cromartie High School (if counting it as popular). The list is far greater if going outside of anime/manga as well.

Not my fault that the majority of popular series nowadays happen to also be poorly constructed when it comes to their narrative or ability to create innovative characters.

Is Planetes really that popular? I mean, I watched the anime, but I don't think it's really a mainstream one - Vinland Saga appears to be the more popular of Yukimura's works (and is the longer series).

It's not mainstream per-se, though fairly popular as far as critical acclaim goes and gained some traction by virtue of Yukimura's fame with Vinland Saga.

Popular =/= critically acclaimed, though. Bleach for example is widely criticized, as is something like SAO, but both are more popular than acclaimed Osamu Tezuka works like Buddha or Phoenix for example (although that's partly due to how old the latter two works are).

I guess it depends what tier of popularity we're judging it on. It certainly isn't mainstream in the sense that something like DBZ or Naruto is, but it isn't exactly a niche series either.

The most that I can say about Planetes' popularity is that it got translated by Tokyopop (not saying much when hundreds of other series were as well) and that Vinland Saga's popularity often causes some people to jump in on the bandwagon, but that's it really. The DVD/Bluray sales for Planetes weren't exactly mindblowing or anything either.

"Mainstream" in anime is difficult to describe, even most things thought of as mainstream are only really mainstream among anime fans and no one else has heard of them (except the few that go beyond, e.g. Death Note, OPM or the big battle shounens).

Planetes is something I vaguely categorize as "someone who's watched anime for the past 10 years has probably heard of this" or "someone who watches a lot of anime today and doesn't restrict themselves to what's currently airing has probably heard of this."
