Cell powered up like Son Gohan

What if it means Cell's boost was = Gohan's? Then we'd have Gohan (final rage boost) >> SPC >> Gohan SSJ2, right?

Some people interpret it like Cell had a huge jump in power just like Gohan also did. But I think that'd be the case if there was a (,). If he said "I huge powered up, like Son Gohan" then it would mean "like Son Gohan, I also got a big power up...", but without the (,) it sounds like the power up he received was exactly equal to Gohan's. See the two sentences:

"I am strong like father"
"I am strong, like father"

The (,) in the second case works indicating what you share in common with your father is being strong, not exactly being strong like him... I hope this is clear enough.

But dunno, since Japanese apparently has no (,).

Cell just meant that he reached a new level of power similar to Gohan's.

You could make it make sense both ways if you really wanted it.

Cell@Gohan = SSJ
FP Cell = ASSJ
SPC = SSJ2

Then you can use the exact same multiplier or whatever and apply it to Cell... ending up with Cell ~ Gohan <shrug>

Oh, like the SSJ2 multiplying the power he used against Gohan. Well thought, I think it makes sense, considering Cell going full power seemed to resemble a bit Vegeta going SSJ grade 2 as far as auras go. But do you think the rage boost would still be necessary? Gohan overpowered Cell in the KMHMH (and Goku was sure he could do it), but Gohan SSJ really couldn't do the same to the version of Cell who fought him... and Goku stressed the fact that Gohan had to be angry to defeat Cell.

It just means that he powered up greatly, like Gohan did. I would say that the portrayal of SPC, with the same lightning as Gohan, implies that he is at least close to Gohan's level, if not equals.

I think such interpretation would be better represented if there was a (,). The JP anime reinforce your interpretation:

"But it wasn't my ordinary Perfect form, like Son Gohan, I had become greatly powered up..."

I always just took it to mean Cell acquired a significant power-up that happened to rival Gohan's own power-up.

You're overlooking a statement which is meant to be simple.

And it wasn’t merely my perfect form: I had vastly powered up like Son Gohan…

The statement is simply implying Cell had a vast power up, just like Gohan vastly powered-up after he turned into a Super Saiyan 2. Nothing suggests this means Cell's boost was the same as Gohan's. If that was truly the case, there would be statements everywhere suggesting this, which doesn't happen. Also, the ":" acts as the comma here.

The comma I'm talking would come after "powered up", and it'd indicate all they shared in common was the power up. Without the comma I kind of read it as Cell indicating he has had the same power up as Gohan. Just like "I'm strong like you" and "I'm strong, like you" would have different meanings.

That analogy isn't the same as Cell's statement because of the wording.

I agree that the "huge powered up" hints at Cell referring only to the large power up.

As a preposition, 'like' means 'similar to'. So the statement ought to mean that Cell powered up to a level that is similar to SSJ2 Gohan's.

"I had vastly powered up similar to Son Gohan". I think it's easier to read it as "My power up is similar to Gohan's" rather than "I powered up to Gohan's level".

Ok, let me make things more clear:

I don't believe Gohan got a rage boost in the beam struggle, because Goku told Gohan he was still holding back, and that he should bring out all of his power.

Now onto the statement, I interpret the similarity to be what the power-up did, but not in the context of a multiplier.

Now, what did Gohan's power-up do for Gohan? Push him to SSJ2 tier. Cell said that he powered up like Gohan, right? So the way I see it, that simply means he was pushed to SSJ2 tier like Gohan.

So in short, I think it's more about a similar power level rather than a similar multiplier.

Hope that makes sense.

This makes sense if the power levels don't work.

Why can't it work with power levels? My stance is about Gohan and Cell being at similar power levels.

Goku didn't exactly use the word "hold back" in the original:

Chapter: 416 (DBZ 222), P7.2, P8.1-2
Context: as Gohan and Cell’s Kamehamehas clash
Goku: “Hang on! Hang on, Gohan! You ain’t putting out all your power yet! Make your power explode!
Goku: “Somewhere in your mind you’re thinking of the damage to the Earth! Don’t worry about it! We’ll undo the damage with the dragonballs!”

I know Goku's statement conveys basically the same point, but if he exactly said "you're still holding back", then it'd be hard to argue Goku was talking of a power beyond what Gohan showed against Cell, since not showing a power beyond his limits isn't quite the same as holding back.

Now, what did Gohan's power-up do for Gohan? Push him to SSJ2 tier. Cell said that he powered up like Gohan, right? So the way I see it, that simply means he was pushed to SSJ2 tier like Gohan.
Don't you think this would be the case if Cell said more something along the lines of "I've powered up to Son Gohan's level!"? "I've powered up like Son Gohan" makes me think that what he is comparing is their power ups, not it taking Cell to Son Gohan's level.
