Could Trunks have worked if he wasn't Bulma's son?

A lot of people think Yamcha being a cheater didn't make much sense, since he was always portrayed as a romantic while Bulma was the one always shown lusting over other guys (General Blue, Jackie Chun [just based on his name], Oolong when he was transformed into a handsome man). Some say making Yamcha the cheater was Toriyama's way of not making the audience dislike Bulma for dumping Yamcha and getting with the guy that (basically) killed him just two arcs before.

So, do you think Trunks needed to be Bulma's son to justify him knowing her and traveling back in time with her time machine? Could he have just been Vegeta's son with anyone besides Bulma, even a random unnamed/unseen character? Would it have made that much of a difference in the long run?

It made for some more interesting inter-actions and such for sure and the relationships with characters meant more than if Trunks' mother or father were just unknown.

No. Just make Trunks the son of Yamcha and Bulma, and have him be stronger than the average human. But Super Saiyan is cool I guess.

Yeah, he could. Gohan could find him as he fights the androids and take Trunks with him to train him or something, and that's how he meets Bulma. Would actually be interesting to be a character who isn't 100% related to everyone from the main plot.

This would heavily affect the Boo Arc though. Not that i care since it's :trash

He definitely could for the Cell Arc, since power-wise, Trunks never played an essential role in the story and him defeating the foes in his future could've easily been rewritten to using the remotes and blowing up foetus Cell, making his Saiyan heritage unnecessary. Would've actually made things far more interesting if he wasn't Vegeta's biological son as him being determined enough to train himself in an attempt to rival the Saiyans would've made him a cooler version of the now redundant Tenshithands (kind've reminding me of Geronimo from Kinnikuman) and actually be a more interesting way of having Vegeta accept his position as both a Saiyan and resident of Earth if he became as accustomed to him as he was to Trunks after the Rosat training.

As for his main timeline self in the Boo Arc, it doesn't really matter if he's far weaker or not even a fighter. Gotenks ended up just jobbing for Gohan and then just being a plot device to stop Gohan become the hero the Dragon World deserves. Just rewrite the plot so that either Gohan kills Boo or is absorbed by him.

The identity of Trunkses parents doesn't have to change for Yamcha/Bulma to stay together. Trunks could have been the result of Bulma's infidelity which Yamcha forgave.

That would just succeed in making Bulma a worthless slut and Yamcha an absolute cuck, so the character assassination would be even worse.

How different you think the end of the Cell Games would've been in this case? Unless you think Vegeta got sentimental enough to go apeshit like that because a friend died, he wouldn't try to fight SPC and Gohan wouldn't have gotten his arm wrecked.

So's the Cell Arc though. :et

Not as much tho :boy

Beyond Trunks being his biological son, their seemed to be little bond between them if any, so it's uncharacteristic either way. Assuming things go differently, Gohan still wins, so nothing really worthwhile changes when Vegeta's "development" in between then and the Boo Arc was completely off screen.

Not as much tho :boy
Boo Arc has far better character writing and doesn't have as egregious a plot device as time travel, so it evens out. :giraffe

It only works if its a saiyan. Doesn't matter if he's Bulma's son or not.

So, whichever woman cheats is a worthless slut? Troll answers aside, such things can happen, even in happy couples.

Thing is, they're far from a happy couple. Bulma's been lusting after other guys and pondering their relationship for as far back as the 21st TB, so yes, calling her a worthless slut is pretty warranted if she were to prove she hasn't grown for the better after over a decade within a relationship. If Yamcha had any self worth, that would've been the final straw.

It could have worked in these ways...

1. Trunks is born to Vegeta and an unknown, female earthling.
In the original future, during the years the Androids were rampaging Earth, Gohan sensed a high power level and
thus met Trunks. Of course, he easily figured out he was Vegeta's son. The two of them train together as in canon.
Alternate Trunks goes to the past to warn the others. During his first travel (Mecha Freeza), nothing changes.
When he travels to the past for the second time, it is revealed he's Vegeta's son and Vegeta is not asked by anyone
about his personal life, but, for a moment, Vegeta gets an expression that shows he himself knows who the mother
is. Androids/Cell arc progress as we know.
7 years later, at 25th TB, an 8 year old boy that looks like the adult that came from the future shows up and introduces
himself as Vegeta's son. At first, he's mad with his father for not having stayed around to raise him. Eventually, their
relationship develops (when Trunks saves Vegeta from Fat Buu, thus showing he loves his father) and comes full circle
when Vegeta hugs Trunks (before knocking him unconscious to go and fight Fat Buu). The rest of the saga happens
as we know it, with Trunks staying around, fusing with Goten etc
After Buu Saga, Trunks keeps being a part of the group, but he does not stay at Bulma's house. He stays with his
mother, whose identity remains a mystery for the whole DBZ. I'm not against her identity revealed in DBS, though.

2. Trunks is born to Vegeta and an unknown, female alien.
During the years he served Freeza, on one of the planets he conquered for Freeza's sake, Vegeta raped a woman
and left without knowing that he'd left a child behind (so this Trunks is a few years older than in canon). After Freeza
died and his empire collapsed, Trunks somehow found out that his father settled on Earth and began a journey for
revenge against the one who raped his mother.
By the time he arrived, Vegeta was already dead and the Androids were rampaging the planet. Trunks decided to stay
to defend the earthlings and made friends with Gohan. They trained together as in canon. When Bulma made the time
machine, she had Trunks promise that, while in the past, he would not try to avenge his mother, for defeating Androids
is the priority.
Alternate Trunks slays Mecha Freeza and meets the gang as in canon. He shows a hostile attitude to Vegeta which no
one can explain. Their relationship develop later when they train together in ROSAT and comes full circle when Vegeta
gets mad over Cell killing Alternate Trunks.
After Alternate Trunks returns to his timeline and kills Androids/Cell, he returns to his home planet where he tells his
mother what happened and she finally forgives Vegeta as well.
Somewhere during the 7 years between Cell/Buu arcs, Present Trunks arrives on Earth for revenge, as he did in the
original timeline. A mini saga follows with Present Trunks being overpowered by Vegeta. He decides to stay on Earth
until he finds a way to take his revenge, but he is still friendly to the other Z fighters.
At Buu Saga, Present Trunks is part of the events. Perhaps he is majinized and takes Goku's place in the canon duel
that awakened Buu. For fusion saga to work, Gohan takes Goten's place and fuses with Present Trunks and Goten is
the one taken to Kais' planet to draw the sword.
In DBS, Zamasu/Black Goku eventually reach Alternate Trunkses home planet. Alternate Trunks had a capsule with
a time machine and goes to the past to fetch help. The battles against Zamasu/Black Goku take place on Alternate
Trunkses home planet, but, in the end, Zeno erases the universe anyway.
