PLANNING
PART1: TV Anime Edition

"PLANNING" means to come up with a plan. Here, we will introduce some interesting episodes about the planning of AnimeDB.

From Arale to Goku... "DB" begins airing!!
February 26, 1986, 7pm... the anime version of "DB" begins airing!! This is the time slot when the smash hit anime "Dr. Slump Arale-chan" based on the original work by Akira Toriyama was airing. The viewership rating for the first episode was an astounding 27 percent. This figure shows how much people wanted it to be made into an anime. By the way, the original work was in the midst of a fierce battle at Muscle Tower at this time.

Valuable! Anime DB and illustrations!

Goku and blue Shenron image: The color settings for Goku and Shenron are different from those in the actual broadcast.

Goku and Green Shenron image: Based on the original cover illustration published in WJN No. 9 in 1985. The Chinese-style art is superb!!

Goku riding the Kintoun with Bulma riding a motorcycle image: Goku is full of dynamism! The red, blue, and white colors of the air bike are unique to the anime.

Goku, Yamcha, Bulma and Oolong image: Based on the cover illustration of WJ No. 7 from 1985. All the original members are here!!

Goku and co. with Raditz in the background image: The title was changed to "DBZ" and several new image illustrations were created.

Program promotion illustration

Dragon Ball image: It is distributed to relevant companies such as TV stations and anime production companies before the program airs.

Dragon Ball Z image: The back side contains information about the story, character introductions, network stations, etc.

Freeza's image: Anime secrets? Sounds interesting, hehe...

What are Toriyama-sensei's secret thoughts behind "Z"?
"DB" ended on April 15th 1989, and "DBZ" began the following week on the 26th in the same time slot. In fact, the "Z" is a play on the name of a certain energy drink by Toriyama, and contains the meaning of doubling power!! However, if you've read this far and think it makes sense, you're still naive. The truth is that Sensei simply named it that because it sounded good. The idea of it having the ultimate meaning was actually something that was thought up later.

BoZ Kid Gohan image: Other than "Z," there were several other title proposals, including "DB Gohan's Great Adventure," "New DB," "DB2," "DB Wonder Boy," and "DB90."

Groundbreaking!! DB-style scenario writing
Did you know that when the original story was published in WJ, the anime script for the same story was also completed? This was possible because of the system in which the editors faxed the rough drafts of the author to WJ and forwarded them to Toei Animation, who then wrote the script based on them. This is a great example of how the anime was made with complete cooperation between the author, the editorial department, and Toei Animation!!

This is how original anime is made!!
Even though they're original, the ideas for episodes and characters (see the boxed article below) often come from Toriyama-sensei. Toei Animation also understood the worldview of DB and created a story based on the idea that "something like this might have happened" even though it was not depicted in the original work. It's because of these behind-the-scenes efforts that the original works can be watched without any sense of incongruity.

Maron's image: Maron is an original character with the highly impactful role of "Krillin's lover."

Vegeta and Cui image: In the anime, Vegeta and Cui are at odds with each other. This is a great example of digging deeper into the characters.

Goku, Grand Kaio, Kaios and Paikuhan's image: In the original Afterlife Budokai, Toriyama-sensei created the Grand Kaio.

Bottom box

Upa's drawing: Toriyama also created the grown-up Upa for the anime.

Chichi's father drawing: It looks like it was drawn as a reference for the anime.

Bird drawing: A legendary fire-eating bird that feeds on fire. Even the smallest details are set.

Bird image from the anime: The fire-eating bird on the right was drawn in the anime in connection with Goku's marriage story. In addition to this, there are many other things that became official events in the DB world based on the anime, such as the setting of Saiyans and Tuffles, and the existence of Goku's father, Bardock.

PLANNING
PART 2 - TV Special & Movie Edition

Following on from the previous page, here we will introduce the episodes from the TV Special and the Movie Edition. Behind the scenes stories from the planning stage and unexpected facts will be revealed one after another!!

The secret behind the decision on the movie subtitles!!
The subtitle for the theatrical version was elaborately crafted, but it seems that those involved in the project had a hard time deciding on it until the very end. This subtitle is closely related to the trends of the time. For example, "A Super Battle for the Whole Earth" is a parody of the title of a popular TV show. "A Red-Hot, Raging, Super-Fierce Fight" refers to the F1 races that were popular at the time! Now that you understand it, it makes sense!!

Was Bardock Goku's enemy!?
The TV special "A Final, Solitary Battle" is highly popular as it deepens the worldview of DB. The idea for this started with the questions "What are Goku's roots?" and "Goku must have had a father," and eventually evolved into the form that was aired. Incidentally, apparently at the beginning of the project, there was a suggestion to make the father Goku's enemy. Hmm, Would you like to see Goku and his father face off!?

Bardock's image: The first special episode, with its hard-hitting content, even influenced the original work.

Future Gohan holding Future Trunks image: The second special episode starring the popular character, Trunks.

How many do you know? Movie character secrets
Here we will reveal the origins of the names of the enemy characters that appeared in all the theatrical releases!! Hats off to the enthusiasm of the staff who created the enemies, taking inspiration from a variety of things, including vegetables, fruits, words, and sweets!!

Piccolo vs Coola's Armored Squadron image: There is a hidden meaning behind each character's name!!

Character name: Gourumes, Bongo, Pasta

Naming analysis: The names are inspired by food. Gourumes comes from gourmet, which means foodie. Bongo comes from vongole, and pasta refers to spaghetti noodles.

Character name: Lucifer, Gastel

Naming analysis: Lucifer comes from the devil in the Bible. Gastel comes from the word gas stove.

Character name: Garlic Jr., Ginger, Sansho, Nicky

Naming analysis: Garlic is derived from garlic, and the subordinates are derived from the names of the spices. Ginger is the English word for ginger, sansho is the Japanese pepper used in unaju, and nikki is from cinnamon.

Character name: Dr. Willow, Dr. Cochin, Kishime , Ebifurya, Misokatsun, Bioman

• Naming analysis: The names were chosen after local specialties of Nagoya, Toriyama's hometown. Willow comes from the sweet Uiro (sweet roce jelly), and Cochin comes from the Nagoya Cochin chicken (breed of chicken). The others are dishes which include kishimen (noodles made in flat strips), ebifurai (fried shrimp) (a Nagoya local favorite), and misokatsu (breaded pork cutlet.)

Character name: Tullece, Amond, Daiz, Cacao, Rezun, Rakasei

Naming analysis: Saiyans are generally named after vegetables. Following this rule, Tullece is named after the vegetable lettuce. The other subordinates are actually the bean series. The words are derived from almond (Amond), soybean.(Daiz), cocoa (Cacao), raisin (Rezun) and peanut (Rakasei).

Character name: Slug, Angila, Dorodabo, Medamatcha, Zeeun, Kakūja

Name analysis: The English translation of Namekuji (Slug) is actually slug. So why is it called slug (Namekuji)? Because it is the origin of the word Namekian. His other subordinates are named after Andromeda. "An" (Angira), "Doro" (Dorodabo), "Meda" (Medamatcha), and "Seiun/nebula" (Zeeun), as they are enemies from space.

Character name: Coola, Sauzer, Neize, Dore

• Name analysis: The name "Coola" is a combination of the Shizuoka dialect word "kuura" and the word "air conditioner." The others are named after Thousand Island (dressing) (Sauzer), mayonnaise (Neize), and Saradore/Salad dressing (Dore).

Character name: Metal Coola

Name analysis: Since its body is made of metal, it was simply named Metal Cooler.

Character name: Artificial Human No. 13, Artificial Human No. 14, Artificial Human No. 15

Name analysis: He was named No. 13 because 13 is an unlucky number and because this is an android number that does not appear in the original work. No. 14 and No. 15 have the same concept.

Character name: Broli, Paragus

Name analysis: Since both are Saiyans, the names come from the vegetables broccoli and asparagus.

Character name: Bojack, Gokua, Bido, Zangya, Bujin

Name analysis: This is the only rare kanji series. The words are derived from the words arrogant (bōjakubujin), which means behaving freely, as well as from the words heinous (gokuaku), inhumane (hidō) and cruelty (zangyaku). That's a really bad way to name them!!

Character name: Bio Broli

Name analysis: He was named Bio-Broly because he was created through bioengineering.

Character name: Janenba

Name analysis: It is an abbreviation of "evil thought waves" (`Jaakuna nen-ha'). A fitting name for a monster from hell.

Character name: Hirudegarn

Name analysis: From the point of view of Mr. Hiruta, Assistant Producer of Toei Animation, something that would shock (Gaaah).

Illustration ANIMATE
"ΑΝΙΜΑΤE" means to breathe life into something. What happened when a character was drawn on a blank piece of paper and given life? Here, we'll tell you the inside story of the illustrations!

Evolving Anime Goku!!
Some people say that "each frame of Toriyama's manga is a work of art," and the illustrations in his works are very appealing. In order to come closer to that appeal, the anime version has hired new character designers and changed the color settings to match the changes in the illustrations. It also seems that one of the character designers had studied Shorinji Kempo, and that the martial art was useful when drawing the characters!!

Early/Later Goku designs: The early Goku on the right has softer lines and the color of his gi is reddish. In comparison, the later Goku on the left has been changed to a sharper design.

Something's different!? Super Saiyan
Why does a Super Saiyan have a version with red eyes? Apparently this happened because Toriyama-sensei drew an illustration on a whim, thinking "Maybe red would be good too?", and gave it to Toei Animation as a coloring reference. But it's cool!!

SSjin Goku's image: Pay attention here
Cel animation for the "The Incredibly Strongest vs. Strongest" poster. The original illustration by Toriyama-sensei is featured on page 182 of Volume 6 of the DB Daizenshuu.

What is this!? Muddy Goku
You know about cel animation, right!? So, have you ever seen the "reverse side" of a character drawn in a cel? The muddy Goku shown above is actually the back of the cel animation. Also, for production reasons, the face and hair were sometimes drawn separately, which resulted in some cels depicting a "bald Goku." It can't be helped, but it's hilarious!

SSjin 3 Goku's image: Front

Muddy SSjin 3 Goku image: This is the back of the cel!!
This happens because you start by painting small parts like the eyes, following the character's outline.

Acoustic SOUND
"SOUND" refers, of course, to sound. You can read all sorts of secrets about sound, such as the secrets behind each character's voice, and how sound effects are made, which are hard to understand for the general public!!

Did you notice? Double Cast
When recording anime, the number of voice actors in the studio is limited. For this reason, in some cases, a voice actor who plays a main character will change his or her voice and acting to play a different supporting character. Here we have gathered some of the double cast members of "DB." There are some surprising voice actors playing unexpected roles, so be sure to check it out!!

Baby Trunks
Who on earth played Bulma's child, baby Trunks? In fact, Hiromi Tsuru, who played Bulma's mother, played two roles.

Bull Demon King, Mister Satan, Sea Turtle
The relatives, Bull Demon King and Mr. Satan, are played by Daisuke Gori.

Chichi, Pue'r
As Mayumi Sho, who played Chi-Chi, retired, Naoko Watanabe took over the role.

Oolong, Bubbles
Naoki Tatsuta, who played their roles, also plays Hire Dragon in the film version.

Shenron, Recoome, Tenkaichi Budokai Host, Red
The role of Shenron is played by Kenji Utsumi, who was also the host of the original Tenkaichi Budokai.

Krillin, Yajirobe, Urania Baba
Their roles were played by Mayumi Tanaka. The role of Krillin in particular was nominated by Toriyama-sensei.

.Tenshinhan, Tenkaichi Budokai Host, Caroni
Hirotaka Suzuoki, who played the role of Tenshinhan, also served as the host in the later stages.

King Kai, Doctor Brief, Babidi, narrator
All four voices are so well-acted that it's hard to believe they come from the same person!! Veteran Joji Yanami was in charge.

Bottom Box

Huh? The voice is different!?

Garlic Jr., the character in the film, played by veteran voice actor Akira Kamiya, later appeared on TV as well. However, due to Kamiya's schedule conflicts at the time, the role was changed to Shigeru Chiba. Incidentally, Chiba is also the voice actor who voiced Raditz. Garlic Jr. was a powerful enemy who fought Goku and plotted to wipe out both god and humanity.

Surprising sound! SOUND EFFECT
Sound effects are also an important element of anime. The sound effects in "DB" are created using a synthesizer, combining various sounds, and other processing. For example, the sound that the super warriors make when they take off in battle is actually made by processing the sound of a fighter jet firing. In addition, the sound of the Kamehameha being fired has been designed to emphasize the sense of scale, in line with Goku's growth. It's interesting to check out the differences in the theatrical version!!

Goku firing KHH image: For a powerful Kamehameha, the bass is emphasized to make the sound thicker.

Goku and Chichi riding the Kintoun image: The sound of the Kintoun flying has been designed to give it a living element rather than just a vehicle, and some clever design touches have been added, such as sounds with a comical nuance.

From parent to child... Can their voice be heard?
Apparently the staff had a hard time deciding who to choose as the voice actor for Gohan. In the end, it was decided that Nozawa would be the one to play Goku, as "it was impossible to imagine anyone other than Masako Nozawa playing the role." The subsequent Bardock also follows the concept that if the child is played by the same actor, then the parent is also the same.

Videl and Gohan's image: Yuko Minaguchi, who played Videl, also plays her daughter Pan. It can also be said that this tradition was established thanks to the success of Nozawa-san, who played Goku and Gohan.

SSjin Future Trunks' image: Young Trunks and Little Trunks were played by Takeshi Kusao.

Anime item collection!!
Here we will briefly introduce the items necessary for anime production. On the right are the scenarios for "DB" and "DBZ," and above are the contents. Based on this, a storyboard and then a dubbing script are created. All of these are valuable documents that are rarely released to the public.

Draft image: This is the storyboard for "The Path to Power." It includes Goku's actions and timing, special effects such as transmitted light, and character lines.

Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z images: Typically, only about 90 volumes of a scenario are produced for one episode.

Fat Boo's image: There's a lot of things I don't know!!
