Do you think DN tries to convey some message? If so, what do you think it's trying to get accross?

The message it’s trying to convey is that if you’re a sociopathic murderer, you are an evil villain.

The main theme of it is that justice is a subjective term purely in the eyes of the beholder and more often than not a shield for selfish actions. For instance, L touts justice yet mainly just wanted to prove superiority to Kira. Light says what he does is just when really it's his only way of defending his corrupted nature and Light makes the view of justice in this story clear when saying that if Kira wins, he becomes justice.

Overall, the main theme isn't anything too complex or original and whilst well executed during the L Arc, Legend of the Galactic Heroes did the same thing far better despite the theme of no side being an absolute good being only one of its many core themes.
