So, I watched the first two episodes and have a few mixed feelings. On one hand, the art being similar to Yuasa's low detail, highly animated characters makes the art automatically inferior to the manga's gritty art style, but has enough of a unique flare that I don't consider it to be bad, especially not compared to what ClanGI Beruseruku and the upcoming Legend of the Galactic Heroes remake did with their art styles. There are some major changes and omissions to the plot, such as the area in which Akira becomes Devilman or Ryo not going into detail on the true powers of demons, but the former fits more with it being a modern reboot whilst the latter never becomes too integral to the plot anyway. It also seems as though it will be far more of a character study than the manga and is interesting in including a critique on the oversexualisation of minors in Japanese entertainment.
Speaking of sexualisation, there's a lot of nudity and sex scenes original to the adaption. Whilst it is distracting and in no way tasteful or even some excusable GoT-esque sextposition, it seems somewhat fitting in terms of capturing Nagai's thematic style, considering the content in his other works like Harenchi Gakuen and Violence Jack, as well as the sequel Devilman Lady.
The callbacks to previous Devilman adaptions was nice, though the modern cover of Devilman no Uta was some low-test beta shit to say the least. Would've been far better to get a veteran like Ichiro Mizuki or Akira Kushida to do it.
Do I think it will be as good as the manga? No. It has too much modern influence and skims over a lot of the plot details. Do I think it'll be bad? No. I simply think it'll take the approach of giving it's own take on conveying the plot and themes of the manga. It seems that it'll at least adapt up to the finale of the manga, so at the very least it's the best Devilman anime made by default.
