No. With him leaving the hospital bed and escaping, he most likely returned to continue the cycle. Johan is meant to represent humanity's darker side, so the ending most likely represents that humanity's dark side isn't something that can be fully contained or destroyed.

But isn't that an unresolved ending? If he keeps going around killing people. I know that's a simplistic way of thinking, but there is no closure in that.

On top of that the last chapter is even called "The Real Monster" and Dr. Tenma's dream of having that conversation with Johan.

And there's also that from what I remember Johan's grand-plan failed thus maybe in his brain he thought his purpose in life was over. Bad analogy (in a case where someone's plan did work) but perhaps think of Se7en where John Doe's final death was supposed to be himself.

I doubt he killed himself. I think the hospital bed being empty was just to show Johan was still at large. He also showed no signs of hating Tenma for reviving him again, nor does he mention suicide.

^That and, in much a similar way as most interpretations of The Joker, a major part of Johan's character is showing the effect one single thing or man can have on a wider scale. Even if his plan for a town's massacre failed, he'd already shown that one man could create so much chaos, so viewing his life as a failure wouldn't be in-character.

Why did the doc seem so nochalant about it then (IIRC)? I haven't finished the series and also haven't gone back from where I left-off (I really need to though) but wasn't there talk of the "perfect suicide"? Did Johan just want to erase his identity or kill himself in the end as-well?
