We know he was a desert bandit, with considerable fighting prowess and some ki control. But we don't know anything else, except that he somehow met Puar, he's met girls before and he knew about Grandpa Gohan, the power pole/nyoibo/compliant pole (lol) and Roshi. He was already around 16 at the start of Dragon Ball, but we have no idea how he got so strong or why he knew so much about Roshi and Gohan. I feel like he knew some other stuff about the DB world too.
We know more about other characters:
Oolong: lived in/near a village. Went to shapeshifting school with Puar, where he bullied Puar. We don't know about his family or why he wore Chinese military attire.
Puar: went to shape-shifting school with Oolong, met Yamcha in the desert somehow.
Krillin: Trained and educated at Orin Temple
Bulma: we know her family and that she left West City for the Dragon Balls
Tien: he had at least one backstory episode with Chazou. They were doing dodgy stuff iirc. I remember tree trunks or lumber. Trained by Shen.
Chazou: backstory with Tien. Trained by Shen.
