Dragonite vs Charizard

In game, both at level 100, I would go with Dragonite, as I would have the option of teaching it several moves from other types, like thunder or ice beam. That might negate the equal resistance to fire from both.

Game-wise, Dragonite will always win since it can tank Base Charizard and Mega Charizard Y, and can always survive at least one hit from Mega Charizard X because of Multiscale (unless Mega Charizard X is running the uncommon Outrage; in which case, it only has a small chance to KO only if the Charizard is Adamant natured). Meanwhile, Dragonite can OHKO pretty much any Charizard variant with Outrage.

Do you feel the same for this battle, from Generations 1-2? Those are the one's I'm most familiar with. Although I'm not surprised he wins in further games as well.

Anime Charizard would rape. Game Charizard is underpowered in order to make others look good.

Didn't Ash's Charizard beat Iris' Dragonite in the B/W anime?

Anime Wise: It depends. Charizard got his ass kicked by a tamed Dragonite in the Orange Islands, needed help from Pikachu and Claire's Dragonair to subdue and calm down a wild one, and had the upperhand against Iris' Dragonite I believe. Against someone else like Lance I don't see Charizard winning since Ash regularly gets stomped by Elite Four members. HOWEVER he almost did beat Diantha in XY(Z) but only lost because he passed out from the strain of overusing Ash-Greninja. Then again I don't know if you can call this a loss, Diantha even admitted Ash surprised her and had a chance of winning.

Gamewise: Dragonite definitely, Dragonite has a better movepool and overall has much better stats. Mega Charizard X however does eclipse Dragonite's Base Stats in some departments but Dragonite with it's more diverse Movepool could still probably manage something.
