Future Trunks' strength at the time of Gohan's death

A pretty minor topic, but it is something that doesn't seem that clear cut. We know Base Gohan was easily blocking SSJ Trunks' attacks, yet stated afterwards that Trunks may surpass him in just a few months. This would seem quite contradictive (unless Gohan can suddenly calculate Freeza Arc tier plot hax as gains). That said, do you find it a likely option that Gohan may have been fighting as a SSJ in their spar beforehand and Trunks was simply fatigued to the level his SSJ form fell below Base Gohan due to not being used to it?

Again, not much of a consequential topic when this version of Trunks only appears for about 8 or so pages, but I guess you could use it to expand on speculation such as the minimum battle power required for SSJ or something similar if you read into it.

Nothing implies Trunks was tired from prior fighting, so i doubt. Gohan's statement is more like motivating Trunks, considering 3 years later Trunks was only marginally above Gohan in equal forms.

Well, it may be worth noting that Gohan actually changed his mind on the time required for Trunks to surpass him, as he stated Trunks would have the potential to defeat the androids in a few years right after knocking Trunks out cold so he wouldn't go there help battling the androids:


Gohan: “If you died, then there wouldn’t be any more warriors to save the Earth…You’re the last warrior with the potential to be capable of defeating those androids after a few years…”


So I think he initially was with the impression that he'd continue training Trunks when he said Trunks might surpass him in a few months, but once it was made clear he might end up dying on his battle aginst the androids, he probably changed his mind about the time necessary for Trunks to surpass him... either that, or the "you might surpass me in a few months" was just him boasting Trunks' confidence so he'd keep focused on his training.

He was panting quite heavily in the last panel of the page showing their sparring.

Gohan's statement is more like motivating Trunks, considering 3 years later Trunks was only marginally above Gohan in equal forms.

That could be attributed to Trunks having lost his sparring partner and having not taken part in fights against the Artificial Humans during those 3 years from what's implied, likely had no way to make massive gains.

Because he was sparring with Base Gohan, who's much stronger than him.

That could be attributed to Trunks having lost his sparring partner and having not taken part in fights against the Artificial Humans during those 3 years from what's implied, likely had no way to make massive gains.

That's possible too. Sparring with much stronger partners seems to yield huge gains, see Android Arc Piccolo. This is supported by the quote Ahill posted, with Gohan changing his words when he realizes he's gonna die fighting the twins.

If you use 4x as SSJ multiplier, it doesn't seem so weird.
