Real answer idk, perhaps it requires another specific fruit user? Or maybe if something breaks the fruit it's as if it ate it.

All I know is that Vegapunk came up with the idea, or at least I think he did, so it requires something to happen for sure.

It would have made more sense to give an animal a devil fruit that turns it into a weapon.

It was Vegapunk who thought it up and made it possible but they never explained how it works. It's a pretty cool idea since it makes the weapon stronger, imagine if Zoro had Funkfreed instead of that faggot Spandam.

Yeah, was gonna suggest the same. But I doubt Zoro would want that sort of help, as he wants to be the strongest swordsman. It would almost be a shot to his pride if he needed a devil fruit to enhance his sword's power.

That and the crew which he's heavily emotionally invested in needs swimmers.

As for it being better to give an animal a fruit to maje it weaponified, if you mean in-universe then that would mean that sophisticated or specialised weapons wouldn't be excluded since there would be no DF for it.
