Goku was at a hospital for 44 days. It's possible he contain the heart virus there due to sick people around him. Also, due to being raise in the wild, away from civilization and Gohan only being with him for a few years, Goku probably never heard of being sick, so he wasn't careful while in the hospital.

I've always went with the fan theory of him contracting it on Yardrat. I still find it so weird how Trunks coming to the past made it take longer to kick in.

Well, when you think about it, it's possible Future Goku contain the virus faster than his main timeline counterpart because he use SSJ (which Vegeta say put more stain on his heart) against Freeza and King Cold and stop training after that fight. Whereas Present Goku only use SSJ for a minute or two against Trunks and continued to train, which help his health.

Chi Chi gave it to him. It's dormant in females, but flares up in males.

I think it makes more sense for him to have caught it in the hospital. If it was a new virus from outer space, scientists wouldn't have found a cure so soon.

Or it could not have any tie-ins with prior events and happened randomly.

Damned right!

But such is life, isn't it? When people get the flu, there isn't usually some great life-event that occurred that led to it. You just kind of get it. It floats around and finds you. You could literally be anywhere. Goku could have been standing in line of the DMV and gotten it, who knows?

Then how Bulma got the cure? She went to Yardrat to study the virus herself?

I'd concur here. Makes for more of a convincing reason why it took so long to develop a vaccine, even taking into account #17 and #18 disturbing research, as well as why it didn't seem to be a worldwide threat.

If anything, wouldn't using it during training with Piccolo and Gohan accelerate the disease? It's not as though Ki growth acts as an antibody for it, after all.

If she can make a Time Machine (which is powered by fluid not common on Earth is Super's anything to go by) I wouldn't put figuring out how extraterrestrial bacteria works past her.

How can she even study the virus if there's no such bacteria on Earth? It's gone now that Goku's dead and his body went to the Afterlife. Even if you theorize she or someone else got the virus and that's how she got a cure, it's still unlikely given how the illness kills the victim in a matter of hours or minutes.

Perhaps she got a blood sample from Goku in the time it was in effect or just after his death and placed it in a container for analysis. Also, Goku's body wouldn't have disappeared immediately this time if the TV Special's anything to go by and Kami didn't need to rush.
