Think about it for a moment... Goku is a Saiyajin, was supposed to be a low-class one, with goal of destroying the habitants of other planets and selling it for a good price for other people... while Piccolo Junior is a Namekian, a race consisted by farmers, healers, magicians... overall, by good and peaceful people, whose goal isn't to terrorize and cast the world into true chaos. Yet, when they were sent to Earth, their holes were reversed... Piccolo was corrupted (Kami-sama, more specifically) and, with the evil growing inside him, had plans to conquer Earth and make that into a nasty world dominated by death, fear and chaos... whereas Goku developed into a 'good' person with the desire to grow stronger and protect his beloved ones...
...and both even fought each other, both with reversal roles from that designed to them in their birth. In an "alternate Universe", where both weren't sent to Earth, we could very well have a Goku battling to destroy and terrorize people's planet with Piccolo living in peace for the sake of keeping the harmony of the world.
Heck, if it weren't for Minus and its change of the reason for which Goku was sent to Earth, we'd have even more of an irony... Goku'd be sent to Earth to colonize it, while Piccolo'd be sent here for benevolent and non-harmful roles, yet would have their 'roles' inversed at the end... the fate sure can be cruel...
...I can understand Piccolo when he said to Gohan that if the boy wishes to curse something, then he should curse his own fate, as does him.
