I'm surprised Anpanman ranked so high, as well as Totoro being above Gundam. I would've expected Gundam to actually outrank Goku when considering the influence its had on such a staple to Japanese culture as the mecha genre, as well as selling more merchandise than any other anime series each year. Also surprised Hello Kitty ranked so high, given how popularity for the brand hasn't been so explosive in recent years.
Pikachu being so high was expected, as was Doraemon being #1 when considering how much material for the series is advertised in Japan. I'm really surprised that despite its influence and iconography on manga/anime, Tetsuwan Atom/Astro Boy didn't make the list.
