Pretty good stuff. I get the :donovan face now more than ever. Am I going to see this fellow again in the near future?

I like the art a lot, and I can see this is the kind of story that will push the obscene, which is a rather enjoyable thing if done right. This reminds me a lot of early Spawn in terms of tone and style. Everything is damned with lots of gore and violence. That, and a mix of Robin Hood/King Arthur but with a much darker twist.

So since I've been thrown for a loop by starting on Chapter Nine, can anyone hook me up with where I start next, and what site I can use to read it. Big thanks to Mystic for recommending this.

Keep reading until you reach chapter 95. Then go back and read chapter 1-8, and then start at chapter 96 after that.

Okay. I just figured out how to navigate the site Misty provided. You want me to go on to Chapter 10 and onward from there? There's also 16 prologues listed before Chapters 1-8.

Ah I should have specified. Keep reading the prologues from where you are now. This is the chronological order:

Prologue 9 to Prologue 16 -> Chapter 1 to Chapter 95 -> Prologue 1 to Prologue 8 -> Chapter 95 to current

Just realized this is published by Dark Horse who did all the awesome Star Wars comics up until Disney bought the brand. As well as Hellboy and the Sin City books.

On Prequel Chapter 15 now so I'm making headway. Story has been easy to follow so far. Guts joins up with Griffin who is offering up dat boi pussy. Donovan died swiftly, as the hero we deserve, but not the one we need right now. This all seems like Guts honing his abilities as finding his place in the world so far. It's still early but I'm getting the vibe that Guts is supposed to be cursed and brings horrible misfortune to everyone he meets eventually, attributing to a life of tragedy and loss.

So did this series start with chapter one proper at the time of release?

Yeah, but the first arc takes place after Guts' first 19-20 years of life, and reading that arc spoils Guts and Griffith's fate at the end of this flashback arc, which is why it's often suggested that you read things in chronological order.

I agree that it would have made all those prequel chapters less interesting if I knew where Guts and Griffin were going to end up.

Also, it's obvious that the prequels were written later because the art and the quality of writing dips a little coming into chapter one. Nothing major, but there's a smoothness to the prequels, the work of people who've been doing this for a while. The art and the smoothness of the narrative is a little more gritty and clunky in some of these early chapters.

I'm glad you're enjoying it. I mentioned it only half jokingly but the allure of :donovan is too strong for earthly men.

You'll hopefully get sucked in by the Golden Age arc. I was reading like 20-30 chapters at a time because I didn't want to stop.

On Chapter 4 proper now. I don't think I would have been as interested in the story had I not started in the prequels, as it got me invested in Guts' backstory and drove some sympathy for him. It also keeps him from seeming too OP as the series begins, since we've seen him go through so much and fail on several occasions.

Normally I'd just consume media as it was originally intended; the order in which it was made, but there's really no reason to do that here.

Rumour has it the series will get with Donovan's 12 incher destroying Gut's digestive tract
