I'm not all that knowledgable on the series of franchise. I know that Transformers that off though.

What are your opinions on that? Best series? Worst series? what do you like about that?

btw, tomorrow the blu-ray limited-edition (?) of the first iconic series is releasing in japan. not sure whether that's the first time though or another release. i doubt that though.

I love gundam. Giant robots, politics, war philosophy. All of it.

That said some gundam series are better than others. The best series for me is probably Zeta gundam. The worst is probably Gundam AGE or SEED destiny.

08th MS team, Zeta gundam, Chars counterattack, Gundam Unicorn, Gundam SEED, Gundam 00, and 0083 Stardust memory are some of my favorites.

I thank you for your comment and everyone-else for theirs too.

Is the series set in a futuristic setting? I mean the robots should make it obvious, but maybe some other things aren't.

Good lord, how many different versions are there?

The series pretty much created the mecha genre back in the 70's. It's been running for 38 odd years. So there are a ton of shows, spinoffs, movies, novels, manga, games etc.

Almost all of the series take place in a timeline where mankind lives on earth and massive space colonies. The original Universal century timeline is more hard science fiction, where some of the alternate universe stories have more freedom to really be out there.

Thank you very much for answering. You made me understand the series a bit more.

The series from the Universal Century Timeline are pretty good. All those from the alternate universes though (aside from Turn A Gundam) are pretty shit imo, since they become less about actual story and the themes of a war drama and far more about merchandising and cool explosions, losing most of it's substance.
Best series of it I've seen would definitely be Gundam: The Origin. Although it suffers a bit from prequel syndrome in knowing which characters will survive, it's still a good story in seeing Char's rise to power.

As a guide for those wanting to get into the series, the best way to watch the UC timeline main series is:

Gundam Movie Trilogy (Mobile Suit Gundam, Soldiers of Sorrow, Encounters in Space) - Takes out the needless filler of the original series and doesn't have a rushed, messy ending.
Zeta - Direct sequel to the original. Don't bother with Double Zeta though, since it's far more nonsensical and only relates to the series via name alone.
Char's Counterattack - Not the best movie of the franchise, but a good climax to the main conflict of the UC timeline.
Gundam: The Origin - The anime and manga are unfinished as of yet, but it is a must watch for those who like the original.

The UC spinoffs worth watching include War in the Pocket, 08th MS Team and Thunderbolt.

I thank this comment.

So the movie versions are better than the original series? Isn't the series the original? So any filler is really there to begin-with?

Whilst that's true, the episodic parts of the original series seem very fillerish, as they have no impact on later events and don't help flesh out the characters any more than the main plot episodes do. The last few episodes were also highly rushed due to the series getting cancelled for low popularity at the time, a problem the movie trilogy didn't have.

It was more character of the week than monster of the week due to most episodic characters being allies.
Haven't really seen much of the original series to compare properly, but those that have tend to agree that the movie trilogy is far more of a concise plot, since they seldom mention any stand out episodic episodes.

Might be interesting to watch that, too. Just to see how that all started. The first series will always be the first. No matter what.
