Toriyama during his original run of the manga is quite underrated as a mangaka and writer in general when taking into account his schedule. He worked without taking any sort of sick leave or other breaks not associated with Shueisha for 11 years whilst having to make most of the story up as he went along and without much of a major plan, yet managed to go without huge cracks in continuity seeping through until the last few years of DB's run. What's more, the way he drew from past material for later arcs despite his bad memory such as remembering Baba's ability to bring the dead back to the living realm for one day that he used in the Boo Arc or how many things slotted into place as retroactive foreshadowing seamlessly such as Goku's more violent traits prior to his training with Popo as well as things such as Oolong's comment or his heart suddenly restarting after being beaten by Daimao all help work in making the reveal that he was an alien easy to swallow. Couple this with how a lot of narrative elements and parallels slot into place despite him not planning on any overarching theme for the series beyond surpassing previous limits, such as the thematic undertones of family surrounding the later parts of the Cell Arc with how Vegeta/Trunks and Goku/Gohan contrasted as father-son duos, and it really is worth respecting how many pieces of the series manage to fall into place very well; particularly when there are some mangaka that have major plot points planned out in advance yet end up with far greater flaws in their narrative and consistency than DB had.
Current Toriyama's capabilities are a shadow of his former self, but at least at one time being a mangaka that could have occasional moments of accidental genius is still enough to give him respect for his achievements...even if he can't remember SS2 existed.
