Hisoka's Role

What do you think Hisoka's motives are?

I think he lives basically to face strong opponents and challenge himself, taking it to the extreme. It's like if he feels excitement in fighting opponents labeled as "strong ones". It can be risky, but he has an extreme amount of confidence in himself, he thinks that even though the opponent is really goddamn strong he won't lose no matter what.

I remember it was said by Togashi that Hisoka was really poor when he was a child, so much so he couldn't buy a bubble gum (which he really liked)... he also really liked magic tricks, the two things that inspired his personality as a grown man --> his attacks with the bubble gum and him making himself appear as a magician.

Pretty sure the part about Hisoka being poor was exclusive to the 1999 anime. Only things we learn from his past in the manga is that Bungee Gum was his favourite brand of gum.

As far as his role in the story, I imagine his character arc will become whole by the end of his Phantom Troupe killing spree. If Gon regains his Nen at some point, Hisoka would probably be the endgame for Gon's battle progression, assuming Gon still has a desire to fight or venture to places like the Dark Continent.
