How did the Original Super-Saiyan even exist?

How did he? If we really think into that it makes no sense.

Saiyans were shown not to care for anyone but themselves. They were also said to be strong, so I doubt they lost a lot.

Super-Saiyan seems to be achieved by someone who's feeling extreme emotions, but if the Saiyans cared for no-one how did this supposed Saiyan become a Super-Saiyan?

Not to mention in the anime (which is not canon but whatever) there was a showing of him as a silhouette and that seemed to show him dying because he went mad with power. If he was a maniac, then how did he have this emotional-trigger to turn Super-Saiyan?

The original SSjin probably hit his head similar to Goku which allowed him to have an emotions.

You don't just hit your head and become good. I'm not sure whether you are joking or not.

According to :troll Goku's mom was a rare exception that has a good heart, and he did say 6 Saiyans with good hearts created the first SSJG around the same time, so yeah...

I'm sure if someone like Vegeta became (a bit) good over time some Saiyans might not have been that bad.

It's weird, though with Vegeta we have Goku's influence and everyone-else, but some just randomly became good?

Vegeta isn't the only one that could change in a race that has thousands of years of history. The way Bardock is portrayed in DB Minus or the TV special (non canon as that is), he's clearly had a change of heart as well after building a family.

Bardock is an asshole in the TV-Special, though. He only cares about his comrades, which might be as good as it gets.

Somebody who only cares about his comrades might turn Super Saiyan when one of them gets killed :elmo

True. Actually now that I think about it, yeah since they care about their race (other than apparently Vegeta) that seems possible.

Pretty sure extreme rage is all thats needed. They are capable of that as well. Vegeta was not good and didnt care for anyone when he went SSJ, he became enraged that he couldn't achieve what his rival could. No other emotions but sheer and extreme frustration and anger.

Of course it's all plot related in the end. Extreme anger doesn't always work, otherwise Vegeta would have went SSJ when he got all pissed to the max about Gohan stealing the DB in the lake on Namek, or he woulda went SSJ2 when Cell killed Trunks, which then he would have had intense emotional distress revolving around caring for someone else.

I think in the context of the Freeza arc Vegeta wasn't supposed to have the pure and tranquil heart required to turn SSJ, but Toriyama scrapped that when it became plot-convenient for him to reach Goku's level.

Maybe a few sexual sessions with Bulma had tranquilled his heart by the time he became SSJ.

But the Saiyans were very powerful and also confident in their powers for the most part. I doubt they lost a lot, so I'm not sure where the anger would come from (in Vegeta's case it was not being able to reach Super-Saiyan), other than losing one of their comrades.

I try not to overthink this stuff. Extreme anger made it happen. That's what I go with. Not really worth thinking beyond that.
