Let's collect all the evidence first...
1. Everyone that died and revived in Early DB did not seem to have any memory from the time he/she was dead.
2. Gramps Gohan did have awareness of afterlife existence. Maybe he was an exception because of some heroic deed of his.
3. Goku was aware of his afterlife existence when he died, but only because he took a special permission to train
with King Kai. Same case as Piccolo and humans.
4. After Cell Games, Goku said he's allowed to keep his body, because ''he sacrificed himself to save Earth''. He also stated he'll
meet ''all great warriors from the past''.
5. Roshi did not seem to have memory from when he was dead after Piccolo, despite sacrificing himself. Maybe because he did
not succeed in saving Earth.
6. Those who died in Trunkses future against Androids do not seem to exist anymore. They never interact with the living in any
way (like Goku/Piccolo/Humans did at their conscious death times). Goku/Vegeta, at DBS manga, even admitted that they ''don't
exist anymore'' in Trunkses timeline.
7. Commoners who died and revived after Cell/Buu did not seem to have memory from their death time.
8. Vegeta had an afterlife awareness after sacrificing himself against Buu, despite he failed to save Earth, but only because King
Yenma decided to keep his body intact, because of Buu's threat.
9. Ancient gods Buu killed did not seem to exist anymore.
10. Old Kai kept existing after transferring his life to Goku.
11. East Kaioshin and Beerus stopped existing after their deaths in Trunkses timeline.
12. Freeza had afterlife awareness in canon. However, that seemed to be just a gag scene, or maybe Freeza was a special exception
because of being extreme evil.
What i make of the above...
1. Most non-gods who die in DB (almost everyone), regardless of whether they were good or evil, lose their consciousness in the afterlife.
2. To keep consciousness in the afterlife, you have to be a great warrior AND successfully save your planet through sacrificing yourself.
3. Maybe you also keep your consciousness if you're extremely evil, so that you can suffer eternal irritation (Freeza).
4. Gods who are above Yenma keep their consciousness if they die of natural causes (age, life force transfer) but cease existing if they
die a violent death.
