I have only ever watched Digimon Tamers of his stuff. I looked him up and his style seems out there and some of his works seem really weird but still interesting. Psychological thrillers (call it morbid curiosity or whatever) and anything relating to that I usually find interesting and like watching.

So yeah how is he?

Tamers was garbage imo, not because it was a bad show necessarily but the imbalance between the childlike monster fighting aspects of the show and the mopey mindfuck-y aspects just left it feeling neither here nor there. SEL isn't bad though.

Still the best Digimon series though. Also I'd say IIRC by far the most emotional and was also kind-of surprising that the series ended in such a sad way. I don't think you have to keep everything light just because it's a children's show. Yeah maybe the psychological aspect went a bit far, but hey I watched the series when I was younger and I didn't turn out ba... :wtf :wtf :wtf nvm

What's good about SEL? Is Ghost-Hound good?

I don't think it's an objectively garbage series like Toriko (anime) or Bleach, it's just not deep enough to satisfy adult viewers and feels kind of slow and traumatic for a children's show about monsters and trading cards. :donovan

The Toriko manga is trash too from what I heard. :CC :CC :CC

I wouldn't say that. The series still had great writing. And maybe it's just me but I think (I think) most of those traumatic aspects flew right over my head when I was younger. I didn't really give it much thought I think. I'm saying I think because I can't really remember maybe it did, but I can't remember. :king :king :king . But the emotional aspects cater to children to make them sad and invested and stuff and that's one of the reasons why the series is gr9.

Serial Experiments Lain is a good, almost prophetic critique on how the internet age would affect the world based on when Japan first received the internet in the 90s. When watching it, you can draw a lot of parallels between it's world and how we consider ourselves and others in the online world, as well the the existentialism that would come when evaluating it. Definitely a worthwhile watch, though without that context, it can seem pretty mundane in some episodes. That's not to say it can't be viewed as a good series without knowing this, but it would mean you have to dig a little deeper to find what's good about it. I wouldn't say it's a masterpiece or 2deep4you like many of the pretentious fans do though. I'd rate it about a 7.5/10

It also gets major points for having a protagonist be "God" and not be a gigantic Mary Sue like almost every other series that goes down that route.

Also, whilst unrelated to Konaka, the producer of Lain also created a series called Haibane Renmei which has similar psychological focus by enough to make a Slice of Life story interesting, with many viewing it as debateably better than Lain. I know Kyo treats it with high regard, at least.

Sounds interesting. How is the thriller/mystery factor in the series if any?

Also you got anything on Ghost Hound or Texhnolyze?

There's a small amount of it in the early episodes, but it's nowhere near top tier.

Haven't watched either, though I know Texhnolyze has mixed reception. Some people love it due to taking a gritty, depressing route with it's theme exploration, whilst others hate it for the exact same reason.

For Lain or Texhnolyze? Lain's mainly psychological and mystery. Texhnolyze I believe is psychological with a little bit of mystery/thriller elements.

I meant SEL. I should probably check that out since it seems so interesting, but fack I still need to finish Monster from ages ago. I doubt I even remember the fine little details from the episodes before.

I'd personally say Monster > SEL anyway, so finishing it off first is for the best.

There's so much to watch. :king :king :king

I should probably get back to watching Monster, but it's been over a month maybe even two or more, since I watched the last episode. I'm not sure whether I can remember all of that, since the series does bring in even little seemingly irrelevant information back later-on.
