How long had Grandpa-Gohan been dead by the start of the ser

When I was younger, I always assumed he died a long time ago, but now that I think about it Goku could still remember his grandpa very well, and his teachings. Goku was only 11/12 at the start of the series, so maybe not that long ago actually.

I think it definitely had been over a year before he met Bulma, though.
