By your estimates Piccolo(Android Arc)>Future Trunks(Mecha Freeza), but Future Trunks(Android Arc) is considered higher than Piccolo, so does Future Trunks skyrocket in 8 months time(the time for the time machine to recharge) with no special training equipment(beyond maybe high gravity)while everyone else takes 3 years to do the same?

Considering plot determines power, and half-breeds have higher potential/growth rates, and it's possible for Trunks to get zenkais from fighting the Androids, and it's never explicitly stated Trunks stayed in the future for only 8 months, most likely.

Better to have Trunks increase in power rather than flat-out ignore what's implied for the sake of "minimalism".

Piccolo was enough to take down Gero with ease, and he still regarded Trunks as his superior. Kami grouped Vegeta and Trunks together. Tenshinhan said Goku shouldn't be any different than Trunks or Vegeta, again placing Trunks on that level.

There's no getting around Trunks making a big gain in the time he spent away from the main cast.

Yeah, he'd also seen how #19 almost killed a Super Saiyan and what kind of punishment it can take.

Yeah I have Future Trunks considerably stronger than he was during his battle with Frieza. Throughout his entire tenture with the main cast he's always been up there with the big dogs of the Z-Fighters being more or less equal to Vegeta. With Tien believing all 3 Super Saiyans to be close I don't see why Trunks wouldn't be considerably stronger.
