Studio Ghibli, who'd out-do who?

One-Piece Stampede is breaking records from what I've heard, but Studio Ghibli films never not reach the top spot at the box-office in Japan when they release, even with big foreign films (like maybe Avengers for example) releasing at the same time. They even manage to stay on-top for over a month or so at-times. They are like unbeatable at the box-office in Japan. One-Piece is also huge though.

So what if they were to go head-to-head in Japan? For this thread, let's say they release on the same day. A One-Piece movie and a movie directed by the meng himself, Hayao Miyazaki. Obviously it won't just be a random One-Piece movie, but one that get's the promotion and hype like Strong World did. Especially emphasising the fact that Eiichiro Oda is involved or even wrote the movie. Which one'd secure the top spot?

How about we say that in numbers, like for example SG film takes in 60% of the box-office collections, OP movies takes in 30% of the collection, rest of all films showing at the time all lumped in together take a mere 10% of the collection. Just an example, but that'd be interesting way of answering.

Scenario 1 - No other big film releasing at the time.

Scenario 2 - Super-Hero film, like Avengers opens at the same time in Japan.

The highest grossing OP film is Film Z, which made 6.87 billion yen at the box office. Comparing that to Studio Ghibli, The Wind Rises made over 11 billion despite being one of the Ghibli films not that well received domestically at the time, it isn't really that close, especially considering Spirited Away made over 30 million yen. Ghibli also has a more long-standing reputation as whilst OP is a cultural icon, its influence often only extends to the populace that have delved into the medium of anime, whereas Ghibli films have a far greater range in terms of the types of audience they touch.
Having Miyazaki as director for the OP film could shift the scales due to name recognition being a reason many Ghibli films did so well (eg. The Wind Rises doing fairly well despite its reception being due to it being Miyazaki's return to directing). At the same time, however, it could make or break the film as many would be sceptical on if Miyazaki could properly handle a story within an already established work without making it feel too dissonant from what the fanbase expect of it when he's better known for writing self-contained stories with the fantastical elements often being allegories for real-life problems rather than natural parts of the plot to work with; much like how Mamoru Hosoda's direction of the 6th OP movie was badly received by fans due to being darker than what they're used to.

I don't believe a superhero film running alongside them would change things much. Looking at Japan's current box office results for the year, One Piece: Stampede has outperformed Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home, despite the former topping the box offices for many weeks upon its release in the west and the latter doing very good at the box office too. There'd probably be far more of a difference if either a Detective Conan or Doraemon movie was running alongside them:

I meant a SG movie directed by Hayao Miyazaki and yeah I guess OP movies are not that close. Detective-Conan and Doraemon (even Pokémon used to) seem to both outperform OP normally. How do the opening gross differ though? Opening week always seems to be the deciding factor when it comes to films? Would a SG movie significantly outperform an OP movie on opening week?

What if Detective-Conan vs SG?

Also about really passionate anime/manga fans watching OP movies? I wouldn't say that. In Japan OP is huge and a cultural Icon. I think if you were to ask children (or even adults) it's more likely they'd know OP than not.

In that case, the SG film would dominate the OP film due to Miyazaki being at the helm.

As for opening weeks, I wouldn't say they were the deciding factor. OP Stampede was #1 of 2019 on its opening week, yet has dropped all the way down to #8 as of now.
Also, I made one mistake in my previous post as Endgame did outpeform Stampede. Considering the former was the result of 11 years of build up for the climax of the Infinity Saga, however, it's doubtful another superhero film will do anywhere near as well as Endgame for a long time.

As for Ghibli VS Conan, that's difficult to say. Detective Conan films are often within the top 3 domestically of each year, yet a Miyazaki Ghibli film may produce enough interest to shift the scales.
It is worth noting that a friend of Miyazaki's hinted through Twitter that Miyazaki may have a new film planned, so this question may reveal itself in time. Unless trying to make a magnum opus, however, it may be unlikely for Miyazaki to reach the same heights as before due to now preferring to focus on short films rather than the 90-120 minute ones he used to.

That's what I actually meant, l0l. More compare their opening week gross because that's when the movies will usually gross their highest, the most interest in the movies and you can see which one everyone wants to see more. How'd you estimate an SG vs OP opening week's go? Like would the SG film take over 50% of the box-office collections in the week?

I guess prime SG/Hayao Miyazaki vs Detective-Conan is out of the question considering Spirited-Away is by a huge distance the the highest grossing film of all-time in Japan.

Detective-Conan going head-to-head with a Hayao Miyazaki film'd be interesting but the SG movie'd have to release around Golden-Week because that's usually when Detective-Conan movies release.

OK, Captain Cadaver (if I can). What about if a One-Piece film (with all the hype & promotion/marketing like I said in the first post) and Prime SG-era film were to open on the same day...only this is going to be marketed and will be the end of One-Piece? For what-ever reason the ending is going to be a movie. There is obviously zero chance of this ever happening (thank-fully) but what'd happen?

Would this movie become the highest grossing film ever in Japan, surpassing even Spirited-Away?

In that scenario, it's most likely OP would indeed surpass Spirited Away due to fans of both the anime and manga wanting to see how it wraps up. That's assuming, in this unlikely scenario, the decision to have a series that fans had kept up with entirely through one of two mediums (if not both) don't take badly to the fact that all they've spent investment in for years boiling down to a "watch the movie" troll move for a conclusion.
