How far do you value the intent when discussing DB? Or do you try to be as close to the content as possible?

The execution of the content is always more important, regardless of if it's DB or any other fictional series being discussed. A writer can have intent to bring about a great idea, but it doesn't matter without the execution being done right. Intent is very important though, but only so long as there's enough of a consistent pattern or transparency to it in order to make strong inferences rather than grasping at straws.

I see what you did there.

As I made clear in that thread, I'm no fan of musing about the 'author's intent' as opposed to looking at the actual text. It's fun to try to discern what Toriyama might or might have not been thinking when he wrote certain passages, but trying to use one's personal interpretation of his intent as a substitute for actual evidence...

As a firm believer of "Show, Don't Tell", I value the content far more than the intent when discussing Dragon Ball, or any other fictional work for that matter.
