It's possible, but I think zenkais weren't that big back then, since no one made a big deal over Goku's increase after his first fight and they later shat bricks over him swallowing the godhax water.

Well, Yajirobe couldn't sense Ki. And Karin was only just about surpassed by Goku, even-though yeah him all of a sudden making such a huge increase for no apparent reason, might should have been a more surprised re-action.

At best I think Karin was above human limits like Goku was when he fought old daimao and was surpassed when Goku ate the senzu, or he was surpassed already and this was the nail in the coffin.

Don't think so. He seems to be scared shitless of any version of Piccolo Daimao, even being amazed that Goku actually won after he ate a glass full of plot hax and got moderately stronger than him. Plus, in the context of the narrative his admission of inferiority and the way Goku's ass got mauled by 45% Daimao seem to overall suggest Karin would've been raped as well if he fought.

As soon as they climb the tower Karin tells goku that he's already surpassed Karin. Goku kind of has to think karin is stronger to go up there to begin with. It's just a plot excuse to get him there for the Holy water.

Well, Piccolo-Daimao at less than half-power is still Old Piccolo-Daimao as an entity, so he'd be scared regardless, right?! Does that mean Karin is below 1% of Piccolo-Daimao, too if he were to power-down?

True, that was before anyone ever had knowledge of Zenkais, so to them this is the same Goku who Piccolo-Daimao fought.

Yeah I don't think ki sense is so precise you can tell someone's powa exactly like with the Scouter, unless they reveal their fighting ki. It's even shown Vegeta and Nappa's powers increase as they fight to the Z senshi, but on the Scouter they don't know how to lower their ki below their maximum until Vegeta gains the ability on Namek.

I don't think Goku got a Zenkai after being beaten by old Piccolo, since it was never implied. I only give zenkais when they are implied.

It's just establishes right away that old piccolo (whatever %) > goku > karin.

I'm still having trouble finding the quote this topic is about. So it must be anime only. Still it is established that goku thinks karin is still stronger than him before going to the tower.
