He was a great mangaka when considering the restraints he was forced to work with and his writing ability with the original manga was a lot better than is often given credit, though he was still far from flawless when it came to even his best ideas and story arcs. He wasn't top tier, but still far from average.

Up there as one of the greatest manga-ka considering his method of work. Dragon Ball is surprisingly consistent and tightly written for a series that was largely written at the seat of his pants.

I wouldn't say Toriyama was the greatest of all time, but you certainly weren't dealing with your average Mangaka. One must be quite talented if they can pull out a work like Dragon Ball despite being infamously forgetful and improvising most of their story.

Considering all that he inspired and how crucial DBZ was with bringing anime and manga mainstream in the west, I'd say he's definitely one of the greatest for all he contributed.

In terms of story and art, I think he's easily surpassed by some that I've read, such as Ito and Urasawa. I find those works (and Shounen like FMA) to be more compelling both artistically and from a story standpoint.

That being said, One Piece is the ugliest manga I've seen. Not relevant to the thread but I wanted to throw that in here.

That is 11/10 gr8 art, I've never seen a better manga page than that in my whole life. This art is the reason why Miura so rarely releases chapters of Berserk, he knows he'll never compete with art this amazing. You must be trolling if you say this is bad art.
