What do you think the speeches from Joe regarding lighting a fire until only hot ashes remained meant? Did it have a more profound meaning pertaining Joe's character? Or simply... what it says?
I think it was to convey that was the final match he'd ever be able to fight in. He burned away all that was left of him in a punch drunk state and now had no regrets.
